The Flanders Fire Department is planning to hold a parade on Flanders Road on Saturday, September 29, which will result in parts of the major roadway being closed for an hour.

The department’s parade will celebrate 70 years of serving the community.

Southampton Town officials are encouraging those heading to or from the Hamptons via Flanders Road to take alternative routes between 2:45 and 3:45 p.m. that Saturday to allow the parade to be held.

“The less inconvenience we can do, that’s what we’re looking to do,” Brian Williams, a member of the Flanders Fire Department, told Southampton Town Board members at a work session on Thursday, September 6.

Mr. Williams said that as of Thursday there were only 15 participants in the fire department’s parade. The length of the closure, he added, will depend on how fast the participants walk.

The parade route begins on Evergreen Road and finishes at the Flanders Men’s Club on Flanders Road. Portions of Flanders Road will open back up as the parade passes, Mr. Williams told the board.

Southampton Town Police Sergeant Todd Bennett told board members that the department was concerned at first because even though the parade was starting at 3 p.m. that day, the road would need to be closed for an hour before and an hour after.

While the roads are closed, traffic is expected to be diverted around the area using County Road 105 and Pleasure Drive.

Neighborhoods in between the closure, on the other hand, will find it difficult to get out during the road closure.

“It’s difficult to let traffic out at any particular location while the event is going on,” Sgt. Bennett told board members. “The communities with no back way out will be impacted the most.”

According to Mr. Williams, fliers have been handed out to nearly 2,000 residents in Flanders, in both English and Spanish, alerting them of the closure.

He also said the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community Association will go over the flier at the organization’s next meeting on Monday, September 11.

As for others who use Flanders Road, electronic signs have been posted in various locations, including the traffic circle in Riverside, notifying people of the upcoming road closure.

Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said he would imagine that if people knew there was a road closure, they would more than likely go toward Westhampton and get onto Sunrise Highway rather than go toward the parade. He noted that it will be about the same travel time.

Are you serious? They're going to close a major road so 15 people can walk down the road and call it a "parade"?!! Unbelievable

I don't think it's 15 "people," but 15 "participants" which would mean fire departments and ambulance corps with their vehicles, etc.

Are YOU serious? It's not 1 people its 15 AGENCIES which will have several pieces of Fire Apparatus / Ambulances / Chief Cars / and personnel marching on foot.
THESE are your NEIGHBORS who are UNPAID to SAVE YOUR LIFE when YOU NEED HELP...
AND EVEN IF IT WAS 15 PEOPLE - IT'S 15 LOCAL HEROES WHO DESERVE COMMUNITY RECOGNITION!
This is also for the benefit of local children who will see this and aspire to become future leaders of their communities!
DO I NEED TO EXPLAIN ANYTHING ELSE ...more
