Ida M. (Smith) Crohan died on March 27, 2019, at her home, with her son Donald and niece Katherine, at her side.
Considered by some to be the “unofficial” mayor of Flanders, she was involved in many local civic and political organizations, and was a staunch Republican.
She was one of the founders of Flanders Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was instrumental in organizing the original Flanders Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Ms. Crohan was the first female Southampton Town Police dispatcher. She was an avid duck hunter and horsewoman, riding with her sons.
In her spare time, she would pack up the car with grandchildren and great-grandchildren for a long weekend away.
She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Edward Francis Crohan; sons, David W., Edward E.; and great-granddaughter Stephanie Lynn Tooker. She is survived by son Donald F. and wife Gayle; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place at the Hampton Bays United Methodist Church, followed by burial at Flanders Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Scott-Rothwell Funeral Home in Hampton Bays.
