Susan Marjorie Whitmore Allan of Flanders, formerly of Westhampton Beach, and Keene, New Hampshire, died at home on October 17, surrounded by close friends and family. She was 73.
Ms. Allan was the daughter of Holmes and Marjorie Whitmore of Walpole, New Hampshire, both of whom predeceased her. She was raised in Walpole and attended Concord Academy and Sarah Lawrence College, where she majored in theater. She married and moved to Westhampton Beach, where her sons were raised. While on Long Island, she continued her education, which led to a career in social work. She returned to New Hampshire and for many years was a caseworker with the Division of Family Services of Keene. She moved back to Long Island, after retiring, to be closer to her family.
Ms. Allan loved the Boston Red Sox, gardening, birds and all things related to nature, especially the mountains of her native state. Survivors said she truly enjoyed helping other people throughout her life, and was a gifted listener. In her final months of life her family, friends and caretakers noted the strength, grace and serenity with which she faced and accepted her illness, they said.
She is survived by three children, Seth and wife Susie, Bradley and wife Catherine, and Alex and wife Allison; and five grandchildren, who called her “Nonnie,” Kyle, Courtney, William, John and Christian. She is also survived by a cousin, Warren Motte of Colorado, whom she thought of as a brother; and lifelong friends, Priscilla Hindmarsh and Joan “Moonie” Edwards. She was predeceased by a sister, Penelope Whitmore.
A memorial service is being planned by the family for the near future.
Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
