ARF Rescues 46 Dogs From Kill Shelter

While the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons in Wainscott provides a safe haven for dogs and cats before adoption, many animals in shelters nationwide are not so fortunate. However, 46 dogs received a second chance when they were rescued by ARF from a closing South Carolina shelter before they were euthanized.ARF representatives traveled to South Carolina in two vans to retrieve the dogs, some of which were residing in foster homes.

Upon arrival to ARF, all dogs were spayed or neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on their vaccines, said Jamie Berger, ARF’s director of communication and marketing.

Originally, ARF intended to rescue 23 dogs, but Michele Forrester, senior director of operations and partnership programs at ARF, said they added another vehicle and arranged to save another 23 canines. This was the organization’s largest transport to date, she said.

The dogs’ arrival on September 4 came only a week before Long Island’s Best Pet Adoptathon this past Saturday, which combined the efforts of ARF and Petco in Commack.

The South Carolina dogs were all up for adoption in addition to longtime residents of ARF like “Squeaky” the pitbull. Well-known to volunteers and community members, Squeaky remained at ARF for three years and became an unofficial mascot, attending parties and posing with the likes of Martha Stewart at GrillHampton. He was finally adopted on Saturday by a family with two young daughters.

By the end of the day, all 46 of the South Carolina rescue dogs were on their way to “forever homes.” For more information, visit arfhamptons.org.

Typical Eastern Hamptons elitism -- young children are drowning in the Mediterranean surf as their families desperately seek sanctuary from despotic regimes and Islamic terrorists bent on genocide, and they're off do-gooding with dogs 700 miles away in South Carolina!

Yup, I own a dog, but someone needs to get their priorities straightened.

More people telling others how to spend their money. and more people exposing their bigotry. What a wonderful world!

Wake up .... There's being a bigot , then there is the fact that our country is on the verge of destruction
Let go of the tree your hugging and face facts

The United States of America is far from "the verge of destruction." What country are you speaking of?

to Frank Wheeler:

What incredible, irrational carping! You criticize an admirable example of selfless charity because "young children are drowning in the Mediterranean surf". Would it change those children's fate if the 46 dogs were left to die? Or are you suggesting that the rescuers should become Mediterranean lifeguards instead?

God knows there have been some vacuous posts on this forum, but yours is a 10!

Very happy to know our local shelter has rescued 46 dogs who otherwise would have been killed. May they all find good and safe homes for the rest of their lives.

Guys. This is an article about saving dogs. Which is what ARF does. ARF's entire purpose is saving animals (animal rescue fund). I have my campaigns too - but I choose to talk about them in appropriate forums. Not randomly and off topic.

Congrats to ARF for saving these dogs and to the families who adopted them.
