UPDATE: Sunday, 5:05 a.m.

East Hampton Town Police have arrested a Sag Harbor man and charged him with DWI in connection with a crash that injured him and a mother and daughter in the vehicle he struck.

William Hurley, 60, was northbound on Route 114 at approximately 6:16 p.m. when his 2003 Toyota pickup truck struck a southbound 2006 BMW sedan driven by Elizabeth Krimendahl, 53, of New York City, according to Town Police. Both Ms. Krimendahl and her 6-year-old child had to be extricated from their vehicle by the heavy rescue unit of the East Hampton Fire Department.

Ms. Krimendahl was flown by Medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center in serious condition, police said, and the child was first transported to Southampton Hospital, then to Stony Brook, also in serious condition.

Mr. Hurley, who police said was charged with DWI and released on an appearance ticket, likewise was transported to Southampton Hospital and then on to Stony Brook for treatment, also in serious condition.

Town Police detectives are investigating the crash and impounded both vehicles for safety inspections. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Town Police at (631) 537-7575.

UPDATE, Saturday, 11:05 p.m.:

Route 114 is set to reopen to traffic shortly, and police are expected to release an official report on the accident Saturday night.

> "two people to Stony Brook University Medical Center."

That suggests at least two serious injuries, possibly requiring a Medivac, and the arrest? Sounds like one of the "I" words.

It's well past time for something more serious to be done about drunken driving. The penalties do not match the crime. What that family must be going through today is unimaginable.

Unbelievable that almost exactly one year before Ms. Krimendahl and her son were injured by a car in Sag Harbor last year. Best wishes to them.

I have far more trouble from locals driving pickup trucks than from city folk. And the local pickup trucks don't go away in winter. The bigger the wheels on the pickup truck, the worse the behavior.
