Two Weeks Post-Primary, No East Hampton GOP Supervisor Results Yet

Sep 24, 2013 12:16 PM

Two weeks after East Hampton Republicans cast write-in ballots in a last-minute primary to determine who will carry the party line for town supervisor in November, the votes have been counted, but the results remain unknown.

A spokesperson in Suffolk County Board of Elections Republican Commissioner Wayne Rogers’s office on Tuesday would only say, “Everything has been counted, but we’re not releasing any information yet.” She could not provide a time by which the results would be available.

Last week, a different spokesperson said the results should be determined by September 30, as that is the deadline by which the County Board of Elections must have the general election ballot certified by the State Board of Elections.

Unofficial results online still say only 67 votes were cast in the September 10 opportunity-to-ballot primary.

Whoever wins is expected to challenge Larry Cantwell, a longtime Democrat and recently retired East Hampton Village administrator who also holds endorsements from the Independence and Working Families parties, but who announced prior to the primary that he would not accept a GOP nod.

The GOP filed a petition to hold the write-in primary after it missed the traditional early-summer deadline to file a petition to get a name on the ballot for supervisor.

Former Town Supervisor and current County Legislator Jay Schneiderman, an Independence Party candidate, declined a GOP nomination earlier this year and chose instead to seek reelection to his current post.

Current Supervisor Bill Wilkinson, a Republican, is not running again.
