Around East Hampton Town Hall: Board Discusses Deer Management Plan

Jul 3, 2012 6:09 PM

In the release, Mr. Browne said the town has received “numerous complaints and several reported fires related to ‘sky lanterns.’”

“When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern, thus lowering its density and causing the lantern to rise into the air,” he stated. “They are known to travel significant distances from the point of release which creates a serious fire and safety hazard because of the potential to start an unintended fire on or off the property from which they are released.

Mr. Wilkinson suggested banning the use of such lanterns outright.

“Listen, it’s pretty, it’s a nice aesthetic, but I don’t think the risks associated with it are worth allowing them to continue,” Mr. Wilkinson said.

Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc said he’d support such a measure, given it will be a “long, hot, dry summer.”

Public Safety Division Administrator Pat Gunn said New York State already has a fire code that covers such objects. Town Attorney John Jilnicki said creating “untethered” recreational fires like the lanterns are punishable by up to a $1,000 fine, according to the state code.

Because it’s already included in a state fire code, the town would need to get a variance—or permission—from the state, to outright ban them, which would be considered a greater restriction.

Mr. Jilnicki said the town will begin enforcing the state code more strictly and will also plan to hold a public hearing on a ban later this summer.

Sounds like a good idea. What is the funding source? Will the Village pay for part of it seeing that any plan that would be effective would have to include the Village.
