East Hampton junior Marina Preiss finished another impressive swim season at the New York State Meet at Ithaca College last weekend, competing in her signature events, the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races.
Preiss, in her third trip to states, finished fifth in the 50 free in 24.42 seconds, a personal best for her, and she was first in her heat. Preiss had finished 12th in 24.58 in the preliminaries on Friday. Her time also placed her 11th overall in the federation, which includes not only all the public schools in the state but private schools as well.
In the 100, Preiss finished ninth in the federation in 52.90 seconds, after taking fifth in her heat in the prelims in a personal-best time of 52.52 seconds.
Preiss was dominant within League III meets in Suffolk County in both sprint races throughout the season, but still had not met the qualifying standard times for both races when she took to the pool to compete in the Section XI (Suffolk County) state qualifier meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on November 10. But she came up with a big performance at that meet to solidify her third trip to states, easily swimming under the qualifying times in both events, both of which she won. Preiss will have another shot next year to make a fourth trip to the state meet as a senior. The entire team should be strong as well, as only one senior will be graduating.
