UPDATE, 12:35

LIPA is reporting that as of 12:10 p.m., all customers had their power restored.

Original Story:

Just 500 LIPA customers were still without power an hour after a transmission line from a power substation on the south side of the LIRR tracks on Cove Hollow Road in Montauk “tripped” and left thousands of South Fork residents without power.

The 500 households and businesses that remained without power as of about noon were all in Montauk. A spokesman for LIPA, Mark Gross, said that all customers should have power restored shortly.

Crews from LIPA are investigating what caused the transmission line to fail, Mr. Gross said. Until it is repaired, power is being routed to customers from other substations in the region.
