Black Lives Matter Rallies Held In East Hampton And Bridgehampton Sunday

Organizer Vanessa Vasquez-Corleone makes signs at the Black Lives Matter rally in East Hampton Village on Sunday. KYRIL BROMLEY
Jul 19, 2016 1:38 PM

About 40 people stood in front of Herrick Park in East Hampton Village on Sunday afternoon holding signs and chanting slogans in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The group of both white and black residents from East Hampton and other areas like Hampton Bays, Bridgehampton, and Riverhead, chanted “black lives matter,” “blue lives matter,” “all lives matter,” and “no justice, no peace,” in response to recent tragedies across the nation involving the deaths of black people and police officers.

“We send our condolences to the families of those who were killed,” said Vanessa Vascez-Corleone, 28, of Riverhead, who organized the rallies. “We’re not here protesting the police or anyone specific. We’re protesting racism in our country.”

A Black Lives Matter rally was held on July 10 in Riverside, and another rally was held also this past Sunday, in Bridgehampton.

The East Hampton event was organized with assistance from Village Police, who helped escort the rally participants from Herrick Park to Village Hall. They gathered at noon and walked up Newtown Lane onto Main Street to Village Hall, eventually returning to Herrick Park by about 2:30 p.m.

Village Police Chief Jerry Larsen said he met with Ms. Vascez-Corleone and her fellow organizers a week before the rally to go over specifics. The rally was originally supposed to take place in front of the Stop & Shop on Newtown Lane but, with concerns over the hot weather, Chief Larsen suggested the rally be moved to Herrick Park where trees would shade the participants.

Fuego McDaniels, 26, of East Hampton took photos and videos of the rally and posted them on social media. He said he hoped that documenting and sharing the events as much as possible would help start more conversations about the issue.

“It’s great to network here with like-minded people and I hope all of this kick-starts a serious economic debate about what’s going on for black people right now,” Mr. McDaniels said. “This is an urgent issue and the time is past due to just talk about this normally.”

I saw the photo of the "lady" holding the sign stating "racism lives in the Hamptons". I've lived here for my entire life, and I can honestly say, that I have NEVER seen a racist incident in my life. Racism may "live" in many places, and I'm not only talking about racism against blacks. Let's not forget that racism is not only affecting black people. It is a disgrace that the BLM movement is, in itself, a RACIST movement.
By Lets go mets (359), Southampton on Jul 18, 16 8:53 PM
As close knit as SH is, to say you have never seen racism, against black people, latino people , or Native?? Do this, for one day walk around in the Hamptons as a black person male/female whatever you are. Follow your normal routine, then let me know about how BLM is racist, that makes no sense.

Your comment just shows that you don't understand what the BLM movement stands for, or that you don't understand what the word "racist" means. I am not in any way connected to the BLM movement but can at least respect the core message that is at the heart of peaceful BLM protests such as the ones referenced in this article.

First of all that will not work because the White House doesn't designate hate groups, that was tried with Westboro and they had more signatures. As long as and wherever there are people in this world there will be what some call "racism." It is what the ego does automatically. It distinguishes those that are like us from those that are different and then says "good or bad." It's a survival mechanism that helps keep our DNA alive. Some of us are able to conquer this impulse to varying degrees, some of us not so much.
Don't get too caught up with the "racism" talk. Try & stick to the issues if you want to affect change.

Bayman, I like your comment because it's one that is sensitive and thoughtful, and you acknowledge aspects that make "racism" a complicated concept and loaded word. Chill out man. I never actually claimed to speak for BLM, and I'm not involved in the movement in any way. I'm just voicing what I think is common sense based on the movement's name, message, and the opposition I've heard regarding "all lives matter." Based on all of these things, I still think there's an implicit "too." I'm happy for someone involved in the BLM movement to disagree with me, but since I'm guessing this does not apply to you (and you've proven you know little about the movement), ...more

By bigfresh (4381), north sea on Jul 27, 16 5:11 PM
Your comment brings up a good point. All life is important and should be valued. I'm guessing then that you don't smack mosquitoes that bite you, and that you're extremely careful never to step on any ants. There must also be no way that you'd ever scrape your leftover mashed potatoes in the garbage, at least not with a heavy heart about the life you've wasted... All life matters indeed.
By SH_Res (342), Southampton on Jul 27, 16 9:45 PM
P.S. Before you attack my comment, please know that I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the lives of this planet's human beings or other species. I'm just trying to make a point: You're missing the point bigfresh! BLM movement proponents would agree that all lives matter, that's their whole point! If you make a mockery of their point of view (that black lives should be valued equally), be prepared for people to make a mockery of yours.
By SH_Res (342), Southampton on Jul 27, 16 9:56 PM
Not attacking your comment SH RES nor mocking your point of view. That being said, I find the BLM movement to be racist.
By bigfresh (4381), north sea on Jul 28, 16 6:13 AM
No it's not racist and if it still has to be explained why it says "Black Lives Matter", then there is no point on continuing the conversation. I don't think any fruitful conversation comes from these comments, people are not really looking to talk to each other but talk at each other, it's a waste.
By adczeta (78), Southampton on Jul 28, 16 7:45 AM
Fair enough bigfresh. I understand the point of BLM to be against racism, not for it. It's OK to disagree though and I appreciate your respectful comment in response to mine.

Donald Trump is a liar. Actually, that's an understatement. Trump is, in reality, a pathological, serial liar of a magnitude that's mathematically inexpressible. He lies from minute to minute without an ounce of shame or compunction, often about subjects and incidents that are well-documented ...more

The despicable chicanery and amorality of the Right-Wing STILL has the ability to astound, despite its innumerable lies and deceptions. Now, in the video to which 27dan refers, some Right-Wing con-artist has looped footage of Hillary giving a speech to make her appear disoriented.

You sir are very disingenuous at best. PEOPLE, PLEASE, PLEASE go look at the video and judge for yourselves! There are two versions, be sure to view the original the second one does have the looping at the end for added effect but ignore that and look at the real footage. You should be ashamed of yourself High Hat ! This woman is not right and It is plain for every honest person the see !

The Hillary picture discussed above and the numerous additional videos of abnormal behavior by Hillary should be of major concern to all Americans, and the world.

Hillary is mentally and physically unfit for office. Her medical state is a danger to this country, as her filmed seizures, blank looks, and physical weakness, does not bode well for any type of competent governance.

Release her medical records.

Let's call a spade a spade, They call me. The “original” video doesn't ...more
