East Hampton's Matthew Griffiths Is State's Top Sporting Clays Shooter

Aug 8, 2017 12:47 PM

East Hampton native Matthew Griffiths brought home the 2017 New York State Sporting Clays state champion trophy last week.

Griffiths, who will be a senior this fall at shotgun sports juggernaut Lindenwood University in Missouri, was the top New York resident shooter at the New York State Sporting Clays Championship shoot upstate late last month.

Griffiths hit 174 out of 200 clay targets in the competition’s main event, the highest score of any state resident and tied for third overall among the 275 competitors.

Griffiths also was the top shooter in the state in the 5-stand competition, hitting 48 out of 50 targets, and the top shooter in the 50-bird 12-gauge competition, hitting 50 out of 50, according to his father, Steve Griffiths.

The event was held at Mid County Rod & Gun Club in LaGrangeville, July 28-30.

The 2014 East Hampton High School graduate has won three ACUI National Collegiate Clay Targets Championship titles since arriving at Lindenwood. Griffiths and his shotgun teammates will be looking to clinch the school’s 15th straight title at the event this winter.
