Robert A. MacGarva Jr. of East Hampton died at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson on March 9. He was 88.
A lifelong resident of East Hampton, he was born February 21, 1926, to Robert and Gertrude MacGarva. After graduating from East Hampton High School in 1944, he attended Mohawk Valley College. The U.S. Army veteran had served during World War II with the 97th Infantry Division Field Artillery on the Philippine Islands.
A retired land surveyor and painting contractor, Mr. MacGarva was a member of the local VFW post and a 60-year member of the East Hampton Fire Department. He was also a member of Most Holy Trinity Church.
Mr. MacGarva is survived by his wife, Ethel; four children, Robert A. MacGarva III and David S. MacGarva of East Hampton, Nancy Fazakerley and husband Robert of Pennsylvania, Donna Lebling and husband Christopher of Ohio; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jane Anderson of East Hampton; and a brother, Richard J. MacGarva of North Haven. Another sister, Gertrude Ferrara, predeceased him.
A funeral service took place on March 14 at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton. Arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton.
