The New York State Department of Transportation has begun repaving sections of Route 114 this week.

Lane closures between Stephen Hand’s Path in East Hampton and Division Street in Sag Harbor began Tuesday, April 17.

Closing the lanes will allow workers to remove cracked and deteriorated bits of road in eight sections over the 4.5-mile stretch after numerous complaints from the public and requests to the state from State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. and State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle to fix the road.

The two officials had been petitioning to get the road repaved for two years, with the State DOT agreeing only last month to do so. The sections will be resurfaced with about 400 tons of new asphalt, and pavement markings will be painted on.

The lanes will be closed during off-peak daytime hours between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the week. The DOT expects the work to be completed in only one week, though bad weather could delay the project. Signs have been placed near the work areas alerting motorists to drive carefully around the repaving work.
