The Section XI Championship meet, known as the state qualifier, is the second-to-last meet of the season for most track athletes. It wound up being the final meet of the season, and for some their high school careers, for a number of East Hampton boys and girls who competed in the event at Comsewogue High School this past weekend.

The Bonackers had a handful of athletes who were looking to continue their seasons at this weekend’s New York State Track and Field Championships but none were able to qualify. Senior Robert Weiss capped his career in the 200-meter dash. After qualifying for the finals in the preliminary race on Friday, Weiss ran to a 23.40-second finish on Saturday, which placed him sixth overall. Weiss also ran in the 100-meter dash where he finished 11th overall in 11.60 seconds. Senior Eamon Spencer ran in the 800-meter run and placed 16th in the county in 2:04.93.

Sophomore Matthew Maya competed in the pentathlon and placed 11th overall with 2,669 points. He placed eighth in the long jump (18 feet 9 inches), 10th in the 1,500-meter race (4:54.22), tied for 10th in the high jump (5 feet 6 inches), finished 10th in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.30 seconds) and placed 12th in the shot put (29 feet 1¼ inches). Ryan Fowkes, a junior, finished the 1,600-meter race in a school record 4:24.19. Additional information on the school record was not provided.

A pair of freshmen Lady Bonackers—Ava Engstrom and Isabella Tarbet—both competed in the unseeded 2,000-meter steeplechase. Engstrom finished 15th overall in 8:00.15 and Tarbet finished 21st in 8:22.14

“I’m proud of these two young freshman athletes who are dedicated and worked hard all season,” East Hampton girls head coach Yani Cuesta said.
