East Hampton High School Alumna Dies From Suspected Opioid Overdose

Jun 6, 2018 11:46 AM

A graduate of East Hampton High School died last week after a suspected opioid overdose.

According to East Hampton Town Police Detective Sergeant Dan Toia, 19-year-old Claire Pollikoff of East Hampton—who graduated in 2016—died on May 31 after police officers found her unresponsive in a car in Northwest Woods four days earlier. Mr. Toia said Ms. Pollikoff was in the car with a man, believed to be her boyfriend, who had called 911 at around 9 a.m. that day to report that she was unresponsive.

Det. Sgt. Toia said the scene where Ms. Pollikoff was found and the items recovered there were “consistent” with the scene of an opioid overdose. However, he said he could not confirm the specific opiate Ms. Pollikoff appeared to have overdosed on, or whether it was laced with the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Items from the scene are still being tested by the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory.

Det. Sgt. Toia added that the Town Police’s detective agency has not investigated any other suspected opioid overdoses recently, but he cautioned that people are “taking their lives into their own hands” when using “any type of illegal heroin.”

Ms. Pollikoff’s younger sister, Cat Pollikoff, set up a GoFundMe page on May 28 to help raise money to pay for her hospital bills and funeral costs.

“Claire Pollikoff was such a giving person,” the GoFundMe reads. “She was kind, she was funny, she had such a contagious laugh. She was an awesome sister and an even better daughter.”
