First, Tom D’Arruda found himself sucked into the world of antiquing in Rhode Island with a shared store called Antiques At India Point.

Then, when he was asked to plan antiques shows, he couldn’t get enough of that.

“I’ve been doing that more than I’ve been buying and selling antiques,” he laughed over the phone last week. “It’s actually a little more exciting than just buying something and selling it.”

Yet, when Mr. D’Arruda first got a call. back in 2006, from Richard Barons of the East Hampton Historical Society, who politely introduced himself and pitched the idea for a show in East Hampton, the antiques dealer said he replied, “Come on. Who is this?”

But ‘tis the season—and Mr. D’Arruda and his partner, Brian Ferguson, have now planned the eighth annual East Hampton Antiques Show, which will kick off with a preview cocktail party on Friday, July 18 and continue on July 19 and 20.

In earlier years, people from as far as the Midwest streamed through the show’s streamer-lined gates, according to Mr. D’Arruda. Now its popularity has expanded farther, with shoppers arriving from “California, Texas and all over the place.”

Could that be because a diverse array of antiques, art, jewelry and collectibles will be sprawled across the 3.5-acre grounds of Mulford Farm—a setting fit for the event? The property holds some of the oldest farm structures on the East End.

This year buyers, decorators, dealers and collectors will find a group from Thailand selling rare Asian antiques. “They’re bringing some of their best goods to our show,” Mr. D’Arruda said.

Fifty-five dealers will be setting up in six large tents, with interior designers lending their expertise in order to give shoppers a feel for how some of the pieces might look in their homes.

According to the East Hampton Historical Society, the focus of the show is antiques. Decorative items for the home and garden vary from vintage rattan furniture to Art Deco accent pieces.

Friday’s cocktail party will celebrate interior designer Celerie Kemble, as the honorary chairwoman. Catering will be provided by Brent Newsom, and live music by Jane Hastay and Peter Martin Weiss.

“It’s actually quite remarkable to come through the show before anything has been done and then come through on preview night,” said Mr. D’Arruda. “It’s just an amazing transformation.” Swept up in the revelries of the past few years, he has found himself walking away with a few additions to his own home.

Mr. D’Arruda works all year long curating dealers to show at the fair, all the while attending other antiques shows and talking to collectors. “It’s nice to discover new talent,” he said like a headhunter.

Ticket proceeds will benefit the East Hampton Historical Society. Tickets for the preview cocktail party start at $150 and include admission to the show. Admission alone is $10, with early buying privileges running $20. The antiques show will be open Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As National Safe Digging Month begins, PSEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators that the law requires them to call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. The call is free and the mark-out service is free.
