Alan York of East Hampton died at Southampton Hospital on November 29. He was 89.
Born in Brooklyn on May 9, 1925, he was the son of Peter and Selma York. He graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, Brooklyn College, and Illinois College of Optometry. He also earned a master’s degree from New York University. He was an optometrist.
Dr. York was a founding member and former chairman of the Cultural Education Committee of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, former chairman of the Guild Hall Film Committee, and taught a Shakespeare study group at the Amagansett Library in 2014. Among his areas of interest were American presidential campaign materials, Irish temperance movement medals, the British abolitionist movement, Jewish Holocaust currency, antique eyeglasses, and American and foreign cinema.
Predeceased by his wife, Claire, he is survived by his children, Barbara York of East Hampton and Steven York of California; and a grandson, Daniel York.
A funeral service took place at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons on December 2. Arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton.
