Matthew Shapoff of Southampton and Manhattan died on May 19 at his home in Greenwich Village. He was 43.

An artist and photographer, he had a studio on Peconic Bay in Southampton, was an innovator in the field of alternative photography, specializing in cyanotypes and Van Dyke Brown 19th-century printing techniques. He received both an undergraduate degree in photography and a master’s degree from ITP at New York University’s acclaimed Tisch School of the Arts. He founded Handmade on Peconic Bay in 2007, and his works on paper and textiles were sold at Hamptons boutiques, galleries and museum shops, including the Parrish Art Museum, and the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum, as well as featured in Hamptons Magazine. He was getting ready to show his work this August at the Hampton Classic Boutique Garden, where he had won a prize for his innovative display in the past.

Mr. Shapoff is survived by his parents, Steve and Andrea Shapoff; and his wife of 14 years, Cynthia Rybakoff-Shapoff; and many friends and colleagues.

No services are planned. A memorial scholarship for children of Southampton Hospital employees has been created by his parents. Contributions to the Matthew F. Shapoff Scholarship Fund may be made to the Southampton Hospital Foundation, 240 Meetinghouse Lane, Southampton, NY 11968.
