This summer, East End residents and tourists alike will have access to the annual Southampton Writers Conference in a whole new way.

Now in its 40th year, the 12-day series of readings, lectures, panel discussions, salons and receptions will be open to the public without residency, just registration—barring the MFA credit-bearing workshops in poetry, fiction, memoir, playwriting and children’s literature.

Conference highlights include a five-part craft lecture series, “Uses of the Imagination,” taught by Roger Rosenblatt, as well as readings by Billy Collins, Amy Hempel, Paul Muldoon, Melissa Bank, Ursula Hegi, Elena Gorokhova, Matthew Klam, Vijay Seshadri, Meg Wolitzer and more.

Those who register will receive a complimentary ticket to The Southampton Review’s presentation of “Selected Shorts” on Sunday, July 19, at the Avram Theater on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. For more information, call (631) 632-5007, or visit stonybrook.edu/mfa/summer.

Additionally, come winter, Stony Brook Southampton’s MFA in Creative Writing & Literature program is planning a trip to Cuba. Concrete details are not yet available, though prospective students can apply at stonybrook.edu/southampton/mfa/winter/cuba.html.

Center Stage at Southampton Arts Center presents “The Dining Room” by A.R. Gurney from Friday, April 26, through Sunday, April 28, at Southampton Arts Center. Once upon a time, before open concepts and eat-in kitchens became the must-have element of a home, the dining room was second only to the kitchen as the heart and hearth of any dwelling. In 1982, A.R. Gurney examined the worth, value and purpose of the center of most family holidays, declamations, disagreements and life-altering events. In 18 vignettes, Gurney examines this room and its versatility and variety of functions — humorously, pointedly, poignantly and ... by Staff Writer
