Paul Brian Beatty died at his home in Southampton, surrounded by his family, on June 28. He was 81.
Born on January 11, 1934, in Brooklyn, he grew up in Queens, where he graduated from St. John’s Preparatory, and later went on to attend Niagara University. He spent his summers as a lifeguard on the shores of Breezy Point. He had a long and distinguished career in publishing and advertising, where, survivors said, he was known as a consummate sales leader, mentor to many, and a great provider to his family. He volunteered as a Eucharistic minister and was an active parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Southampton, and was a longtime active parishioner at St. Anne’s R.C. Church in Garden City. He was an avid golfer and member of the Southampton Golf Club, where he always enjoyed a fun game of golf with close friends and family. Mr. Beatty was especially fond of his summer vacation spot, which eventually became his permanent residence—North Sea Beach Colony in Southampton. He took great pride in the lifelong memories created, shared, and treasured for each of his children and their respective families while living and visiting the Southampton home throughout their lifetimes and still today. Survivors said he always seemed at peace and had a smile on his face while in North Sea and that he attributed this to it being the ideal beach setting and to the people who made up the Colony.
He was described by survivors as always humble, “a true Christian and a gentleman.”
Mr. Beatty was predeceased by his parents, James and Bride Beatty; a brother, James Kevin Beatty; and a sister, Mary Denise Beatty. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Audrey; his children, Kathleen Beatty of East Hampton, Paul Beatty Jr. of Garden City, Maureen Duggan of Connecticut, Kevin Beatty of New Jersey, and Maribeth Quinn of Garden City; daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, Pam Beatty, Patrick Duggan, Meg Beatty and Justin Quinn; and 13 grandchildren, Bridget, Claire, and Kathleen Beatty, Conor, Kara and Lizzie Duggan, Jack, Kevin, and Colin Beatty, and Michael, Emily, Drew and Owen Quinn. He is also survived by a sister Patricia McNulty, and sisters-in-law, Connie Beatty and Sister Shamus Eileen Dwyer O. P.
The family received relatives and friends on July 1 at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Mass was held on July 2 at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
