Car Crashes Into Telephone Pole Early Tuesday Morning

Aug 25, 2015 3:15 PM

North Sea Road was closed for more than three hours Tuesday morning after a car crashed into a utility pole, bringing down power lines, just after 6 a.m.

Matthew Vetri, 81, of Shelter Island was driving his Mercedes-Benz station wagon southbound on North Sea Road, near Little Fresh Pond Road, when he fell asleep, according to Southampton Town Police. His vehicle crashed into several mailboxes before hitting the pole.

First Assistant Chief Paul Delzatto, of the North Sea Fire Department, said there was no sign that Mr. Vetri had used his brakes, as there were no noticeable skid marks on the road. “He damaged the telephone pole so bad that it leaned to the inside of the road,” he said. Downed lines kept the roadway closed; PSEG could not get to the scene of the accident until 9 a.m., which is why the closure continued for several hours.

Mr. Vetri was not seriously injured, Mr. Delzatto said, noting that airbags in the vehicle were deployed. The Southampton Volunteer Ambulance transported the driver to Southampton Hospital for further evaluation.

“It is very lucky that nobody was walking in that area,” he added.
