Motorcyclist In Hampton Bays Crash, 25, Dies Of Injuries

Jul 25, 2012 9:26 AM

A motorcyclist injured in a serious crash in Hampton Bays two weeks ago died of his injuries over the weekend, Southampton Town Police said.

Eliain Araya Vargas, 25, of Hampton Bays was pronounced dead on Sunday at Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was flown after the July 8 crash on Argonne Road East near Gravel Hill Road.

The driver of the car in that crash, Adis Ljesnjanin, 17, also of Hampton Bays, had driven away from the scene that day, but police caught up to him a short time later about three miles away, on Terrace Drive near its intersection with Montauk Highway, not far from his home. He was arrested and charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving, as well as driving without a license and speeding, both violations.

The Suffolk County district attorney’s office now will review the case with Town Police detectives to determine whether Mr. Ljesnjanin will face more serious charges.

Police have released few details on the crash itself, other than the fact that both the motorcyclist and the driver were driving along Argonne Road East near Gravel Hill Road. Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa stopped short of calling the crash a result of drag racing, as one witness had described it. Police said they were still investigating the cause of the crash, but said that both the motorcyclist and the driver were under investigation for playing a role in the accident. A third vehicle was also hit in the crash, they said.

“We’re actively investigating the accident,” Town Police Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said, adding that witness accounts were still being reviewed.

The victim’s family could not be reached for comment this week.

According to Mr. Ljesnjanin’s arrest report, he had been driving a 2012 Mercedes-Benz 350 convertible on Argonne Road East near its intersection with Gravel Hill Road at about 1:37 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. He posted $6,000 bail following an arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court and is due back in court on August 6 at 1 p.m.

Shelley Borkoski, a witness, said the teen’s car and the bike were both headed east on Argonne Road East at a high rate of speed, and said it appeared they may have been racing. She said a third vehicle had pulled out of Gravel Hill Road and was also struck, but its driver was unhurt.
