Oct 9, 2012 11:56 AM

With two games remaining on its regular-season schedule, the Eastport South Manor girls tennis team is on the verge of clinching the League VIII title, perhaps with an undefeated record.

After three victories last week, the Lady Sharks stand at 11-0 in league play, with Mattituck (10-2) and Southampton (10-3) trailing them in the standings. ESM was slated to travel to Shelter Island (0-12) on Wednesday and to host Center Moriches (2-9) in its final match of the season today, October 11, at 4:30 p.m.

ESM’s biggest win last week was a 4-3 victory over Mattituck at home on Friday, keeping the team in first place. The Lady Sharks also won, 6-1, at Riverhead on Monday and had won, 5-2, at Southampton on October 3. ESM played Connetquot (League III) in a non-league match on Saturday and also won that match, 4-3.

ESM’s big win against Mattituck last week came at second doubles. Laura Kesnig and Loriann Bobins faced off against Lady Tuckers Melissa Hickox and Christine Bieber. Kesnig and Bobbins took the first set, 6-2, dropped the second set, 6-3, but regrouped to win the third set, 6-3, to take the match.

Kesnig and Bobbins came up big in the win over Southampton as well. They had to face Julia Dudley and Cecelia Schuerer, again at second doubles. After winning the first set, 6-1, Kesnig and Bobbins dropped the second set in a tie-breaker, 7-5. The third match also went to a tie-breaker, but this time Kesnig and Bobins came out on top, 7-5, to take the match.

The first two rounds of the Division IV Individual Championships begin on Saturday at William Floyd High School at 9 a.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be on Monday at noon, with the finals slated to be held Tuesday.

ESM Boys Golf

The Eastport South Manor boys golf team won its lone match last week, 7-2, over Greenport/Southold at Hampton Hills to remain in a tie for first place with Mattituck. Both ESM and Mattituck are 7-1.

ESM outshot Greenport in team stroke total, 227-235. Kyle Tillinghast shot a 43, while Trevor Hayle and Joey Busiello each shot a 44, and all won their matches.

ESM’s match with Mercy last week was rained out.

Hampton Bays Boys Golf

The Baymen lost both of their matches last week. After losing 8-1 to Mercy at Calverton
Links on October 2, Hampton Bays lost, 7-2, to Riverhead at Cherry Creek on Thursday, October 4.

Matt Agoglia shot a team-low 40 on a par 35 in the loss to Mercy. Hampton Bays head coach Rich Gostic said he felt a good portion of his team finally put together scores in the low 40s, but Mercy was able to outshoot his team. Individually, Agoglia won with a 45 in the loss to Riverhead, while Charlie Decker won with a 47.
