A Southampton Fire Department crew extinguished a brush fire in Shinnecock Hills on Saturday evening.
Firefighters responded to a call at about 5:20 p.m., according to Chris Brenner, the 2nd assistant chief of the Southampton Fire Department. Two brush trucks, one pumper and two tankers were used to douse the fire, which took place just west of the Stony Brook Southampton campus. Officials were at the scene for about an hour.
Units could see heavy smoke billowing up from the woods as they were approaching the scene, he said. The fire was “dangerously close,” to two homes, he said, a distance of about 10 feet.
First Assistant Chief Mike Kampf was in charge. About 30 members responded to the scene.
Southampton Town Fire Marshal Brian Williams said on Monday that he was still investigating the cause of the fire.
