Press Debate Will Focus On January's Special Election For Southampton Town Board

Democratic candidate Julie Lofstad.
Dec 22, 2015 3:16 PM

The Southampton Press will host a “conversation” with the candidates in the special election for an open seat on the Southampton Town Board in January.

The event, which will feature Democrat Julie Lofstad and Republican Richard Yastrzemski, has been scheduled for Saturday, January 16, at 1 p.m. at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill. The event is free to the public and will be hosted by Press Executive Editor Joseph P. Shaw.

While both candidates will field questions on numerous topics, including water quality and planned development districts, the format of the event will be different from past debates, and will instead feature Ms. Lofstad and Mr. Yastrzemski having a conversation on stage with Mr. Shaw.

“We wanted to try something different—to give the candidates a chance to actually talk rather than simply repeating sound bytes,” Mr. Shaw said this week. “We will keep it civil and focused on the issues. I really think that’s what people want out of the debate anyway: They want to hear the candidates speak, not just recite rehearsed material.”

The event will not have time limits or red cards, giving both candidates a chance to delve deeper into the issues. The conversation will be guided by Mr. Shaw, who will review questions submitted from various citizen groups before the event.

The audience will not be allowed to ask questions at the debate, but questions can be submitted in advance to mailbag@pressnewsgroup.com.

The special election will be held on January 26.

Dumb and dumber

Maybe Ms Lofstad can explain how she us IN FAVOR of development and why she sent a letter to my house that said so. I know her sycophants say she's for 'wise' development. I am sure that is just like the pro development talk that we have already gotten from phony democrats like Anna Throne Holst and that drug dealer Brad Bender. She is not a real democrat. Just another know nothing phony politician.
By CleanWaters (79), Southampton on Dec 23, 15 7:12 AM
There you go again, Clean. Trying to fool people as to what Lofstad said in her letter.

So lets see the entire quote and place her statement on development in the context she clearly expressed.
It said "The issues on which I'll focus as a Town councilwoman are promoting WISE development and preventing UNWISE development, restoring our damaged water quality and providing suitable housing to accommodate our workforce and enable our children to live where they grew up"

No sycophants ...more

Development can not be stopped. That cat was let out of the bag long ago. The best we can do now is to try to control it. Ms. Lofstad will do a much better job of that, otherwise we will end up looking like Far Rockaway.

So let me see if I've got this straight development is ok if a democrat wants it but bad if a republican wants it. You Lofstad supporters are the biggest hypocrites around. How the hell is a this person who the press said was clueless on the issues going to be able to do anything the right way? Especially with her buddy Jay Schniederman deep in developers pockets. Read his campaign finance reports.

As I've noted in another thread, these guys - CleanWaters and Gillnetter -- are attack dogs apparently brought in by the GOP leadership just for this election. They only started posting this month, and it's been all mud, whatever they think might stick (zero in the real world). They are as determined as they are misguided.

But Cleanwaters is claiming Democrat ties, TB.

This last election I voted for Shneiderman, Scalera and Hagan. I tend to vote republican most of the time but I felt Jay might have more influence and connections to the county that could help benifit Southampton town. I liked Rich a lot even got to speak with him about a few issues but in the end took Jays experience over Rich. With that said I urge residents to come to the debate and see the same deer in the head lights look on Lofstad that I witnessed during the last go round. Her inexperience ...more

Thanks, GoldenBoy, for an intelligent, substantive comment that addresses the candidates' qualifications, something that's been rare on the Yastrzemski side of the conversation -- not Yaz's fault, just that his supporters tend to be mindless mudslingers. And mud begets mud, on both sides.

I'll try to respond to you in kind, with issue-focused material. That 'deer in the headlights' look that you attribute to Ms. Lofstad is more a matter of being new to elective politics than a matter ...more

And you call Rich's supporters mudslingers... Attacking him for his appearance is wrong, TB. Calling him a Bear? Shame on you.

Know both candidates. Rich has a better understanding of what goes on outside of Hampton Bays. Just as the Dems say Rich only understands The Village, I put forth the idea that Julie only knows Hampton Bays. No shame in that, she has worked to make it a better place for her children. She's an excellent PTA Mom. And that, I believe, is where it ends. Julie will follow ...more

Let us cut to the chase.

This election isn't about who has more governmental experience or which side can sling mud the best.

It is about whether Dems or Reps have the 3 votes constituting a majority. That is the bottom line.

If folks voted for Schneiderman because they preferred his agenda, then a vote for Julie is a vote for Schneiderman's agenda. Obviously she is going to vote more often on his side in those instances where political philosophy is paramount and ...more

If Joe Shaw can keep the two of them discussing and not regurgitating sound bytes this could be a most educational forum.

Not an easy task for Mr. Shaw.

I wish him well, it would be a great service for those few of us who actually intend the vote in this Special.

So Joe, please don't let them slip and slide and side step.

Thanks

Hey on that hills project i thought the side by side comparison shows that the hills project is actually less of an environmental impact then the as of right development. I would rather have a strong powerful bear with conviction in office then an idiot puppet of George Lynch any day of the week and twice on sunday.

Just wondering why a couple of my friends would support the liberal or democratic line. Didn't brad bender just get caught selling pills? Fred Thiele what is your explanation? Why would the conservatives support a drug dealer. Seems to me you supporting Walsh and the other corrupted. What is the matter gilgo coming back on you. Keep it up liberals. Keep back pedaling You are looking good out there.

Wow! Wonder what friend islander was smoking on the evening of December 28? Early Happy New Year, right?

NTiger makes a compelling argument, writing that if you voted for Jay Schneiderman in November, you should vote for Julie Lofstad in January (Tuesday, January 26, to be exact), because Lofstad is absolutely vital to making the Schneiderman program happen. Why? It's the arithmetic of the Town Council. Sure, we don't emphasize party affiliation so much at the local level as we do ...more
