Anna Throne-Holst Closes Out Six-Year Stint As Supervisor

Anna Throne-Holst in her last days as Southampton Town Supervisor. DANA SHAW
Dec 23, 2015 10:54 AM

Outgoing Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst is taking a much-needed holiday break before jumping back in the saddle in the new year. This week, Ms. Throne-Holst was spending some of her last days as supervisor packing up her office and tying up loose ends, and she said she planned to spend the holidays with her family and friends before kicking her campaign for Congress into high gear.

Reflecting on six years in the supervisor’s seat, she said her time at Town Hall has been stressful and amazing at the same time.

“I don’t remember the bad things—I just don’t,” she said, when asked about some of the darker moments of her six-year term in office. That included allegations regarding the Town Police’s now-defunct Street Crime Unit, an officer who was addicted to prescription painkillers, and issues that led to convicted drug dealers being released from prison—plus a $7.5 million federal civil rights lawsuit filed against the town by Lieutenant James Kiernan, who was disciplined as a result of the controversy. That lawsuit is still making its way through the court system.

“Someone reminded me of the whole thing with the police department in light of what is going on in the county right now, and you just can’t make this stuff up,” said Ms. Throne-Holst, referring to the forced resignation, in October, of Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke after an investigation into the arrest of a 27-year-old man who claimed he was attacked by Mr. Burke and fellow officers.

Ms. Throne-Holst started her political career in Southampton Town by serving two years on the Town Board. She decided to seek higher office, and in 2009 won her first two-year term as supervisor, defeating incumbent Linda Kabot for the position. She has since won reelection to the top seat two more times.

Earlier this year, Ms. Throne-Holst, then a registered Independence Party member, announced that she would run to unseat incumbent Republican Lee Zeldin to represent the 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. First, however, the newly minted Democrat must turn her attention to Dave Calone, a Brookhaven Democrat also seeking the party’s nomination.

“My focus is going to be very much reflective of what my focus was here,” she said this week. “Reaching out to the people and bringing them into the discourse, getting out into every part of the district, and talking to people about the things that matter, and talking to them about how I administrated and legislated, and the work that I hope to get done in Congress.”

Ms. Throne-Holst said she is most proud of the improvements made to the town’s finances, saying that legislation put in place will be difficult to undo in the future.

“Without the financial house in order, nothing else matters,” she said. “The level of policies and procedures, from top to bottom and bottom to top, makes it so everything—from the fund balance policies to the borrowing policies to how resolutions have to be written for any of that to be effectuated, then going through department to department and looking for deficiencies—it’s huge.”

According to Ms. Throne-Holst, the best part of being at Town Hall was the people she worked with on a daily basis. Ms. Throne-Holst said people like Deputy Supervisor Frank Zappone made coming to work every day a happy experience, and made it easier to effectuate change for constituents.

“Some departments and some of the staff are materially different than what it was in the past, and I think that we are a very well gelled and coalesced group of people working together and a very dedicated group of people,” she said. “That has been one of the really rewarding and fun parts of the job. I have to say I have made a lot of friends in this organization and I value those. I loved coming to work every day.”

While she still has a few days left before transitioning into her civilian role, Ms. Throne-Holst said she is hopeful that Supervisor-elect Jay Schneiderman will be well set to take over the position and that she is leaving the town in good working order. She recommends an open door policy, saying it helps to be available to the residents.

“I want to thank the people of Southampton,” she said. “It has been such a wonderful opportunity—it has been rewarding and so interesting and this is a wonderful town and it needs to stay wonderful.

“It has just been an enormous honor to serve,” she continued, “and I thank each and every one of the residents of the town, and the voters in the town, because without them I would not have had the opportunity or gotten so much of the work I got done. So I am just very, very grateful for the opportunity.”

Does she remember when a Westhampton Police office called her cell phone at 1:00 am in the morning and said " we got her" , referring to the DWI traffic stop of then Supervisor Linda Kabot, her then political opponent at the time? Perhaps 1st District voters will be interested in knowing how Anna rose to the Supervisor role and won her first election. Maybe the Feds would be interested too.

Pragmatically, Anna should start her real estate career immediately and forget the congressional race. Thanks to her habitual shilling for property developers as supervisor, her Democratic primary vote total therein will be historically small.

She's just wasting time (and not getting any younger.) Besides, the sooner she starts selling real estate, the fresher will be the memory of her political favors (and their consequential indebtedness) to developers to whom she will apply for employment.

In her tenure she has managed to destroy most departments in the town. The town may be better off financially but crime is rising, roads are falling apart and our parks are uninviting. While services decreased her personal employees 20% increase were discouraging to say the least. I would think twice about running for congress. The public your currently serving will most likely not support you again
By GoldenBoy (339), EastEnd on Dec 23, 15 6:02 PM
The town is a mess. Only ones benefiting from her are the developers. She fed people what they wanted to here to get the votes. She will be laughed at running for Congress. Time for a change in Southampton, tired of the democrats ruining the town of southampton and it needs to start on January 26th.

Anna Throne-Holst would be the first to admit that she has been exceedingly fortunate to have the help of Frank Zappone throughout her administration. His highly effective presence will be missed.

This is not to say that Ms. Throne-Holst did not have accomplishments in her own right, for she did. Nor is it to say that I believe Mr.Zappone's influence was 100% benign, for I don't.

Mr Tiger,
I too wish Mr Bender a life of successful recovery. But I have to call you on one point. While Mr. Bender himself may have not turned to violent crime, violent crime does exist in the northwest corridor, his home base. And it is reasonable to assume that a good percentage of that violent crime is fueled by narcotics. The very narcotics that Mr Bender has pled guilty to distributing.

If Hillary really wants to talk about womens Issues she should read this, Admission: I regret my abortions Older women lament early-life decisions, face senior years alone Woman crying regretting abortion In a poignant essay, A well known author confesses the unspeakable: she regrets having aborted her two children. The 47-year-old wrote, “Each time I hear a child laughing or see children playing, I regret not having any. I truly regret that I did not have at least one child to leave all that I have worked so hard for. It’s not easy knowing that as you grow old, and friends pass on, that there is no one there to take care of you if the worst happens.” In today’s permissive culture, such an admission is tantamount to heresy. Women are not supposed to regret abortions; they’re supposed to feel liberated. Admitting she was too young with her first pregnancy (at 17) and not ready to face motherhood alone when her boyfriend abandoned her during her second pregnancy (at 23), the woman now laments the emptiness of her life without children. “I guess that’s the irony of life – something comes your way and you reject it; but when you want that same thing later, it never comes your way again,” she wrote. “My two closest friends and I have gone through the same thing, and when we get together all we do is sip wine and laugh at how our lives have turned out. Each of us say that had we known how empty our lives would have been now without a child, we would have brought ours into the world. Unfortunately, each of us is way past that age that we can have a child now. I am 47 and they are 48 years old. This guilty feeling is why I decided to talk about my biggest regret. Young women need to hear from people like me who have walked in their shoes, did what we were told, but now are unhappy because of it.”

Supporting Israel is perfectly OK. "I" support Israel. What is disloyal (to say the least) is the Honorable Lee's use of stolen U.S. State Department secrets against OUR government and in support of the interests of the Likud Party of Israel.* If condemnation of this behavior is anti-Semitism ...more

Funny thing Joe, for such a smart guy he seems to have forgotten to answer your second attempt at asking him to define his stance on "what if all government employees engaged in this exact same behavior as the wife of the womanizer "

Obama brings himself to narcissistic, self-pitying, tears as he makes advances in his plan to map out every gun owner in the country, so they know were to confiscate them when he makes his final moves on his war on the second amendment, proprty rights and the US Constitution

I'm going to guess that you support Israel the way I supported the Ground Zero Mosque.....

Israel told congress what they discovered; the TRUTH about Obama, and what he does in spite of what congress states. Apparently it's ok for Obama to sign treaties he has no authority to sign, but it's treason to tell congress the TRUTH about Obama.... A foreign ally shows us what Obama is really about ! Israel cares more about the United States than Obama ever could !!!!

An example of dementia ,would be the current administrations first thought ,that it was possible to negotiate with a country that chants death to America while burning the American flag.

An example of colluding would be actually "negotiating" with a country that chants death to America while burning the American flag.

It's not treason to be opposed to The Iran deal.

An example of insanity would be thinking "diplomatic efforts" matter when negotiating with a country that ...more

Just noticed your post from Jan. 5 asserting that Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and President Obama's grandmother all said that the president was born in Kenya.

Needless to say, your assertion is a complete fabrication, one that is easily disproved by the most cursory research (as is the case with ALL extreme Right-Wing fantasies.)
