U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin Opposes President Obama's Plan To Close Guantánamo Bay Prison

Feb 23, 2016 11:50 AM

President Barack Obama on Tuesday delivered a plan to Congress to shut down the prison at Guantánamo Bay, a promise he made to the American people when he entered office.

The plan examines 13 different locations within the United States to house prisoners, including facilities in Colorado, South Carolina and Kansas. For the plan to move forward, Congress would need to change the law, as currently the government is prohibited from spending money on bringing prisoners to the United States.

“For many years it has been clear the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay does not advance our national security—It undermines it,” President Obama said in his announcement to Congress Tuesday morning.

The plan is opposed by many Republicans in Congress, including U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin, who represents the East End. “President Obama’s decision to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and send terrorists back home overseas, and even bring high-risk terrorists to detention centers here in the U.S., is a dangerous political move that could not come at a worse time as terrorist groups like ISIS continue to spread across the Middle East, Europe and the rest of the Western world,” Mr. Zeldin said in a statement released prior to President Obama’s announcement. “The facility at Guantanamo Bay has not only served as a place to keep some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world, but also as a tactical and strategic facility where intelligence is gathered to prevent potential attacks against our country and ensure U.S. national security.”

Mr. Zeldin charged that President Obama’s decision was not about the safety of American citizens and was meant only to bolster his legacy.

What the heck would Imam Obama know about our national security interests, he's done nothing but damage them from day one of his regime. You want to close Gitmo; charge the prisoners with a crime or let them go.

Unfortunately GITMO is necessary to hold terrorists and enemy combatants. Many of those released have returned to waging jihad against us. Disgusting that Barak Hussein Obama, peace be upon Him, is attempting to close it on His way out the door. Our narcissisti POTUS is more concerned with His legacy than national security.

Gitmo is maybe the single most significant source of terrorist recruitment. That's why. The antidote is either to close it, or to house GWB and Richard S. Cheney there without any chance of parole.

Sounds like you'd prefer that we debase ourselves and stoop to that level of inhumanity. It's not as if the prisoners that deserve imprisonment are going to be let go. They would simply be moved to other facilities on American soil. Guantanamo is exceedingly expensive to operate which is a factor in the decision.

It truly boggles the mind how politics (AND RACIAL HATRED OF PRESIDENT OBAMA) bring negative situations/outcomes where none should exist. Perfect case in point is how the bipartisan support for closing down Gitmo that existed when Obama first took office was eroded via the concentrated effort to destroy him. Roadblocks were set up via legislation, and the flames of fear were fanned incessantly (so much for the "home of the brave").

Donald Trump is a bigot and a racist

By Dana Milbank, The Washington Post

Let’s not mince words: Donald Trump is a bigot and a racist.

Some will think this an outrageous label to apply to the frontrunner for a major party’s presidential nomination. Ordinarily, I would agree that name-calling is part of what’s wrong with our politics.

But there is a greater imperative not to be silent in the face of demagoguery. Trump in this campaign has ...more
Mar 12, 16 11:19 PM appended by Mr. Z
He hasn’t gone after Jews recently, but his backers have, and Trump was uncharacteristically silent when prominent booster Ann Coulter, responding to Republican candidates’ support for Israel in a debate, tweeted: “How many f------ Jews do these people think there are in the United States?” Though all Trump supporters surely aren’t racists or bigots, even a cursory examination of social media reveals that many are. Those supporting Trump tend to be white, less-educated and middle-aged and older – those who are anxious and angry because they are losing ground as the American economy changes. An analysis of the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll by my colleague Scott Clement found that Trump, who has the support of 14 percent of registered voters overall, does particularly well among white men who aren’t college-educated (24 percent) and white, non-evangelical Protestants (27 percent), but gets only 3 percent of non-whites and 5 percent of those under 30 years old. This doesn’t mean Republicans or conservatives generally are bigoted. I wouldn’t label any other candidate in the GOP field that way (though Carson’s remarks disqualifying Muslims from the presidency crossed the line) and Trump, though leading in the polls, lacks the support of most. Thirty-two percent of Republicans supported Trump in the latest Post poll, which means 86 percent of the overall American electorate hasn’t embraced him. Trump’s rivals for the nomination are slowly and haltingly finding the courage to call the man what he is. Chris Christie on Monday criticized Trump’s treatment of Kovaleski. John Kasich, after last week’s Neimoller video, issued an ad Monday showing Trump’s mockery of Kovaleski’s disability and saying Trump isn’t “worthy” of the presidency."

Ok once again an odd statement..... Yes Jews did purchase land. Uncultivated, swampy, unwanted and often over priced with few inhabitants....
Such a deal........

From 1880 to 1948 roughly 78% of Jewish plots were purchased from large land owners. By willing sellers. Those selling included the Mayors of Gaza, Jerusalem and Jaffa. Even As'ad el-Shuqeiri, Father of PLO Chairman, Ahmed Shuqeiri took Jewish money for his land.

In 1920 David Ben-Gurion stated, " Under no circumstances ...more

HHS I know why you take sentences, and entire paragraphs out of context. You do this to distort the facts and the truth, and to push the agenda that Israel has no right to exist.
