Donald E. Fanning, a lifelong resident of Southampton died on Friday, April 15, at his home in the Village, surrounded by his family. He was 84.
Mr. Fanning was born on July 14, 1931, in Southampton Hospital to Howard L. and Margaret (Malone) Fanning and was educated at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School and Southampton High School
He later married the former Barbara Howard of Greenport and together they made their home in Southampton. For 30 years, he worked for the Southampton Village Highway Department and then worked with the Southampton Village and Southampton Town police departments.
In the community, Mr. Fanning was a 64-year member of the Southampton Fire Department, including service as a captain of the Fire Police and as second assistant chief. He was also a member of the South Fork Fire Police Association and a communicant of the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Howard Fanning; four daughters, Mary Thomas and husband Steve, Dona McKissick and husband Jim, Theresa Hunter and Brad Eleazer, and Erin Frankenbach and husband Jim; a brother, Gerald Fanning; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters and four brothers
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A firematic service will begin at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Poland Roman Catholic Church; Father Mike Vetrano will officiate.
