NYPD Officer Under Investigation Found Dead In Hampton Bays Tuesday

Jun 10, 2016 9:37 AM

UPDATE: Thursday, 11:45 a.m.

Although police said Wednesday that the officer was found in a wooded area in Riverside, police confirmed Thursday that the officer's body was found in a wooded area behind a McDonald's in Hampton Bays.

Original Story

An off-duty New York Police Department officer who was the suspect in the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl in Brooklyn was found dead Tuesday night after apparently hanging himself in a wooded area in Riverside, according to Southampton Town Police.

The suspect, Ronald Cleto, 32, had fled Brooklyn after the NYPD began investigating the reported abuse at 12:05 a.m. Friday after the girl's mother called 911.

Mr. Cleto had not been heard from until his body was found. Town police received a call at approximately 12:45 p.m. Tuesday and found the officer to be dead on arrival.

The NYPD would not provide additional information about the ongoing investigation into the reported abuse.

Some newspaper you have there. It's Ronald Cleto not Robert. Geez.

Need to check your facts. Body was found in Hampton Bays. Behind McDonalds, in the woods where the homeless have "tent city". Get more in depth, dig deeper. I bet a lot of people are not aware of the homeless problem. Do some real reporting, try harder!

Late yesterday afternoon The Daily News, citing "a Southampton police spokeswoman," identified the person involved as "Ronald Cleto" and that he "was found hanging in a wooded area near Flanders Rd. in the Riverside neighborhood."

Does that "tent city" have an entrance off Flanders Road?

Not that The Daily News is any "newspaper of record," but what's the actual story here?

Tent city is just west of stop and shop in Hampton Bays, behind the old wicker store that is next to Mc Donald's.

Yes - this hanging thing in the woods seems to be popular - Third one reported in as many years - how does a police officer drive himself all of the way to Hampton Bays for a hanging suicide?
By Vikki K (490), Southampton on Jun 9, 16 3:35 PM
Well he gets in the car and drives 100 miles in order to not be discovered immediately by those he knew. Are you perhaps suggesting that someone drove him there, hung up his body and made it look like suicide. I seriously doubt it.

No ...I think he came out here to find someone in that tent city and was killed - hanged by someone else.

Is anyone going to assure us that this camp in the woods will be shut down. I looked at Ariel satellite maps on line and boom there it is, clear as day . WTF

Town Board ? Chief of town Police ? Code Enforcement ? Jay ? Anybody care to comment how this could have been overlooked for so long and why it was allowed to continue !!! ?

Our children ride there bikes to that Mac Donald's for Gods sake WTF!

If you no where to look you can use goggle history map images and can pinpoint the camp to have been set up somewhere between 2010 and 2012

Where would you like the homeless to go. Should we put them in your back yard. And your assumption that all homeless are a danger to us is ignorant. People fall on hard times. Does not make them a danger.

If it was in Watermill or B-hampton wouldn't last a day. Hello, Glinka, are you there?!

You let your children ride their bicycles on Montauk Highway to get to Mickey D's? Really?
Maybe you need to know where ( not no where) to look to gain some parenting skills.

Are you saying every single homeless person is exactly the same and no homeless person is dangerous? It seems you have limited knowledge of homelessness. I guess it is OK with you to have those "down on their luck" live in homeless tents or those with substance abuse problems and mental disabilities not get help. Please rethink your logic or there lack of.

it sure does not make them productive resposible people you ____ !
If I was homless It would take me 3 months max to get a job and save enough to get off the streets . give us all a break jacks would you.

if they have substance abuse problems thats all the more reason to get them off the streets where our children are.

would you like us to lock our children up blank ? whats the matter does it make your job harder when the senior citizens call up and complain about there load music on the beach or that they are riding their skateboards behind the stores again? deal with it

Homeless camps in HB are certainly not new news. If they shut them down there they'll just move back to where they were. The cemetery, under the railroad bridge, across the street from Katrinka's.

I've known about the problem for over 10 years.

Know anyone that can take discarded materials and build them small houses like a guy is doing in California?
By Vikki K (490), Southampton on Jun 16, 16 1:05 PM
There's more ways to get there than on the highway...and parts of the way have sidewalks even if you use the highway...think bicycle - not car

Just to play devil's advocate, how many of the homeless are American citizens. if not, the answer to "where do they go?" is HOME
By fire11 (276), east hampton on Jun 12, 16 7:07 PM
There have been people camping there for 10 years as someone else noted. Code Enforcement doesn't bother them for the same reason they didn't bother to shut down illegal prostitution at CB's for almost 2 years until someone was disemboweled-- it's too much work and there is no investment return. Far easier to troll Airbnb and get fines out of ordinary taxpayers. It's easy to get there, just walk along the power line path, go behind the closed wicker store, or behind the parking lot at the Macys ...more
