Salvatore Michel Miglio of Southampton died July 20 at St. Francis Hospital. He was 83.
Born on September 16, 1932, in Brooklyn, to Annarella Ferrara Miglio and Domenico Miglio, both from Naples, Italy, he was the husband of Marilyn (Poling) Miglio, to whom he was married for more than 60 years. He was a resident of Manhasset for more than 50 years and a parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C. Church.
A real estate developer on Long Island and New York City, he was active in the Republican Party and local political campaigns, and he was the former commissioner of human rights for Nassau County for 25 years. He founded and conducted the Christmas Bail-out Program at the Nassau County Jail for 25 years. He also established a school 35 years ago in Haiti (Operation Reach-out Haiti), in memory of his son Domenic Miglio, which, to this day, feeds and educates more than a thousand Haitian students, some of them orphans. In addition, he built a library at Our Lady of Grace Montessori School in Manhasset, also in memory of his son.
When his children were growing up, he enjoyed going clamming with them and taking them for boat rides in his Browning speedboat in Little Peconic Bay. He also enjoyed taking them to Italy and France during the summer.
Survivors said he will be most remembered for his unending love of family, humanity, and, especially, all children.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Miglio; children, Dina Rojas, Grace Pearce, Sally Doulton and Richard; grandchildren, Emily, Edward and William Rojas, Emma Pearce, Ryan, Aidan, Domenic and Dylan Miglio, Paul and Dawn Banach; sons-in-law, Edward Rojas, Matt Pearce and Fred Doulton; sisters, Ida Arbucci and Sadie Paciullo; sisters-in-law, Marie Miglio, Mae Tucillo, Arlene D’Arienzo, and Lucille Tymann; and brothers-in-law, Nicholas D’Arienzo and Tom Tymann
He was predeceased by his son, Domenic Miglio; and several brothers and sisters.
Visitation was at Fairchild Sons Funeral Chapel in Manhasset on July 22. A funeral Mass took place at Saint Mary’s R.C. Church on July 23.
