Father Edward Kiernan, who assisted at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, died on September 24. He was 87.
Born October 24, 1928, he grew up in Brooklyn, attending Our Lady Help of Christians Grammar School, Cathedral Prep High School, Cathedral College, The Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, and St. John’s University.
Ordained on May 29, 1954, he was priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn for 62 years, serving the Holy Family Parish in Flushing, St. Andrew Avellino, also in Flushing, and St. Joseph’s Parish in Astoria. He was the founding pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and served as pastor in St. Columba Parish in Marine Park, Brooklyn.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Frances Kiernan; and a brother, Frank Kiernan.
The funeral Mass was held at the Basilica Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Burial took place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.
