No injuries were reported after a chimney fire spread to the roof of a Westhampton home on Saturday night.

Westhampton Beach firefighters were called to the Montauk Highway home, near Brushy Neck Lane, at 11:23 p.m. and were able to quickly contain the blaze after flames from the chimney spread to the roof, according to Westhampton Beach Fire Department officials. They received assistance from both the Eastport and East Moriches fire departments.

Westhampton Beach Fire Chief Bill Dalton said on Tuesday that the home sustained minor damage but mostly smoke damage. He also said the owner was not home at the time of the fire and called 911 after returning home and seeing flames.

The response forced the temporary closure of Montauk Highway in both directions near the home for about two hours; both lanes were reopened at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday.

The Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance also responded to the scene while the Quogue Fire Department was on standby at the Westhampton Beach firehouse for the duration of the call.
