Westhampton Beach boys tennis head coach John Czartosieski had a plan going into the Division IV Tournament, but it was up to his players to execute it.

Mission accomplished.

The Hurricanes qualified three of their five doubles pairs—two of which reached the division finals on Tuesday—for the Suffolk County Championships, which begin this Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, and conclude on Monday, May 22. Each round will be played at William Floyd High School.

In an all-Westhampton Beach final, Riley Smith and Danny Tocco defeated teammates Josh Kaplan and Owen Williams, 6-2, 6-1, to take the division doubles crown. Czartosieski is expecting Smith and Tocco to garner one of the top two seeds in the county doubles bracket this weekend. The other doubles pair that qualified for counties, Andre Insalaco and Brennan Tomlinson, lost to Smith and Tocco in the semifinals.

Czartosieski couldn’t say when the last time, if ever, he’s ever had three boys doubles pairs reach the semifinals. He said it’s nice to see his players live up to their expectations, so far.

“The ultimate goal for the entire season was to get Danny and Riley—and we had this discussion as a team as well—to hopefully make the state tournament. So anything else the boys have done so far is icing on the cake,” he said. “They should all be proud of themselves for making the county tournament. That’ll be an exciting experience for all of them.”

Daniel Caputo was the only singles player for Westhampton Beach. He played well, Czartosieski said, but lost in the first round, 6-4, 6-4, to Jeramie Stoessel of William Floyd.

Hampton Bays

Patricio Pulla was the only Bayman to net a victory at divisions. He won his first-round match, 6-3, 7-6, over William Floyd’s Waldo Rustian, but then lost in the next round to eventual singles champion Mike Koscinski of Center Moriches.

Felipe Salazar also appeared in the singles bracket for Hampton Bays. Nico Ceballos and Dario Vasquez and Gabe Guambana and Andrew Campos all played at doubles but all lost their first-round matches.

Section XI Tournament

East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton and Westhampton Beach each won their first round matches in the Section XI Team Tournament last week but then lost their quarterfinal matches on May 10. The fifth-seeded Bonackers lost at No. 4 Commack while the sixth-seeded Hurricanes lost at Half Hollow Hills West, the third seed. Both were 6-1 scores.

Westhampton Beach defeated No. 11 Connetquot, 6-1, in its opening round match. The only loss for the Hurricanes came at fourth singles. Danny Tocco defeated Ciro Baldinucci, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1; Riley Smith won, 6-4, 6-3, over Alan Sabovic; Andrew Insalaco beat Dimitri Cavanaugh, 6-3, 6-3; Owen Williams and Josh Kaplan defeated Kenny Haller and Joseph DiMartino, 6-1, 7-5; Adam Sheren and Andrew Hempel won, 6-1, 6-4, over Kory Kaelin and Sebastian Govea; and Sean Toner and Chase Moschella defeated Giridhar Mula and William Kennedy, 6-4, 6-3.
