David L. Benneman of Southampton died Monday, July 3, 2017, at Southampton Hospital, after a prolonged illness. He was 71.
Mr. Benneman was the son of the late Roscoe Benneman and Luetishie Brinkley-Benneman and was raised in a Christian home in Southampton. His Christian values were instilled early on and he practiced his strong faith for his entire life. As a child he attended church services and Sunday school at King’s Chapel, Church Of God In Christ. He later joined Padgett’s Temple, COGIC, in Southampton where he faithfully served as an usher and deacon for many years, right up until the time he could physically no longer serve his church, due to illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Southampton and attended Southampton Public Schools. He was employed by Ronnie Kane, a position he held proudly for many years and worked at the Post House on North Main Street. He played on the softball team there, where he earned the nickname “Long Ball” Benneman, because he could hit the ball so far. He remained a close family friend of the Kanes for all of his life. He also worked for Margot Horn as a landscaper. For many years he volunteered at the Human Resources of the Hamptons, in the Food Pantry, where he worked alongside founder Mary Ann Tupper. He was well known around Southampton Village. At Christmas he always made sure everyone had a gift. He made it a point to attend his friends’ funerals—even if he had to hitchhike. He was known for his thoughtfulness and kindness, and his willingness to lend a helping hand, survivors said.
Mr. Benneman was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Robert Benneman, Melvin Benneman and Howard Benneman; and three sisters, Dora Lee Davis, Dassie Benneman and Mattie Wilkerson. He is survived by a sister, Bertha M. Ward of Southampton, who cared for him through his illness. He also leaves behind his close friend, Margaret (Delores) Vincent of North Carolina, three sisters-in-law, Naomi, Ann and April; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
