The evening will be divided into two parts, one with the four town board candidates and one with the two town supervisor candidates, and will be moderated by Joseph P. Shaw, executive editor of The Press News Group.

Candidates for supervisor this year include Republican Ray Overton, who will be challenging incumbent Jay Schneiderman, an Independence Party member who was elected supervisor in 2015 on the Democratic Party line.

Candidates for town board include Republican Thea Dombrowski-Fry and Democrat Tommy John Schiavoni, who are challenging Republican incumbent Stan Glinka and Democrat incumbent Julie Lofstad for two available seats on the board.

Members of the public may pose questions to Mr. Shaw prior to the debate via email at mailbag@pressnewsgroup.com, by phone at 631-287-1500, or on the 27east Facebook page.

Why are there no Dems running for town clerk and tax receiver.

All elected positions should be challenged.

Southampton Dem. Party Chair Gordon Herr and the Dem Executive Board could not even find a true Democrat to run for Town Supervisor- so you expect them to go another mile and find qualified candidates for Town Clerk and Tax Receiver ?

That would be too much on their plate !

We need to have our party stop running these politicians posing as Democrats run on our party line. Jay Schneiderman supports the Hills?!?! How can he represent our Democrat Values? We have more registered Democrats than the republicans and our numbers are growing everyday thanks to our friends from the city getting registered at their summer homes. There is no reason why the Democrats can't sweep every election.

OK folks, here it is:

(1) Tax Receiver is not up for re-election this year, so forget that.

(2) Southampton Dems, myself very much included, believe Republican Sundy Schermeyer has done a splendid job as Town Clerk, so we’re not opposing her. This is called common sense, reaching across the aisle, nonpartisanship, non-ideological politics, whatever you like, but it’s practical and good. Thank heaven local politics doesn’t have to be the fierce pitched battle ...more

You are right, Sundy does a tremendous job! Kudos to her and to the Dems for recognizing that fact.

Professional politicians are the problem, not the solution!

Why are Gregor and Aldrich not included in the debate?
By auntof9 (108), Southampton on Oct 11, 17 11:49 AM
OK, Turkey Bridge,

(1) Tax Receiver not up for re-election this year, but when she was, Dems had no challenger.

(2) Agreed, Republican Sundy Schermeyer does an excellent job as Town Clerk, but again, she should be challenged. Perhaps there is a Democrat who is even more "splendid".

(3) And then there's your guy, Jay Schneiderman. Not supporting him because he's a member of the Independence Party, is not absurd. The Dems supported ATH and Brad Bender, and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED ...more

TB's defense will be more partisan platitudes , nothing else to add to the discussion.

I know that is fashionable to bash govt on all levels, but I want to share how Julie Lofstad and Stan Glinka treated our community when we were discussing the workforce housing application over at 41 N Phillips Ave in Speonk.
Julie met with us once as a candidate and 3 times as a board member. We explained that we were concerned about significant overdevelopment in the area, as we were looking at 3 zone change applications at the same time. Julie listened, understood, and never wavered in her ...more

Well I am certainly not going to be voting for a Democrat that is running on the Republican or Conservative lines. You cannot be a Democrat AND a Republican. Or worse a Democrat AND a conservative. All that means is that you are a unscrupulous politician without any commitment to our Democrat ideals.
By CleanWaters (60), Southampton on Oct 12, 17 11:11 AM
How about voting for the individual and just ignore party affiliation? Local politics blurs the line between the parties so the candidate is more important than the line(s) they are on.
