The Southampton Town Police took nine needy children from the Town of Southampton shopping for Christmas gifts on Thursday in an effort to spread a little cheer during the holiday season.

The department’s efforts were part of Target’s Heroes & Helpers program, which helps families that need financial assistance during the holidays.

This year, nine children between the ages of 9 and 17 went shopping with officers from the Town Police Department, the State Police and the Southampton Town Police Explorers at Target in Riverhead.

“This is probably one of the best programs we have,” said Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph.

She explained that the children were told they could pick out anything in the store that they wanted. While some children went straight to the toy section and picked things like Legos, others went to the clothing section to pick out new clothes and boots.

Whatever they chose, Lt. Ralph said it was theirs.

All of the toys were paid for by Target and donations provided by the Southampton Town Police Benevolent Association and the Town Superior Officer’s Association. Even Southampton Town Police Lieutenant James Kiernan’s 10-year-old son Jack decided to help out by donating his allowance money to the children.

Lt. Ralph said she saw other police departments around the country participating in the partnership program with Target a few years ago, so she contacted the store to find out how Southampton Town could get involved. This year marked the second year the two groups have partnered together.

“Officers are so willing to do this because it is such a great program,” Lt. Ralph said.

The children were also treated to crafts, like decorating Santa Claus hats, and dinner from Chipotle in Riverhead, making it a fun-filled night for everyone involved.

The Southampton Town Police also partnered with Target in Riverhead earlier this year when children of families dealing with hardship were taken shopping for new clothes and school supplies.
