Southampton Town Board Updates Law To Allow Short-Term Rentals For Events Like U.S. Open

The Southampton Town Board amended its rental permit law in a unanimous vote on Tuesday to allow short-term stays in the town during special occasions—including large events, such as the U.S. Open golf tournament in Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in June 2018.

The amendment relaxes a law allowing homeowners to rent out their homes for only a minimum of two weeks at a time. Under the newly updated law, the Town Board can approve a waiver for short-term rentals for individual events that are expected to draw large crowds to the town.

Those who chose to rent their properties will still have to obtain the necessary rental permits and have their homes up to current code.

Before the amendment, visitors for large events, like the U.S. Open, were required to stay in hotels—it would be illegal to rent a room in someone’s house, explained Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman.

The town doesn’t have enough hotels to accommodate the number of people expected to hit the South Fork for events as large as the U.S. Open, so Mr. Schneiderman said it makes sense to add the amendment to the law that was originally passed in 2008. “This creates a mechanism to do it,” he added.

The last time the U.S. Open was in Southampton was in 2004—before the rental law banning transient rentals was adopted.
