UPDATE: President Trump Arrives In Southampton

President Donald Trump greets supporters at Gabreski Airport on Friday afternoon. DANA SHAW
Aug 18, 2018 12:18 PM

UPDATE: Friday 2:57 p.m.

Before Mr. Trump left Gabreski Airport, he greeted many of the Air National Guard members and their families by walking over to them.

At one point, someone shouted that it was the Master Sergeant’s birthday, and Mr. Trump walked over and took a picture with the master sergeant.

The whole time, Secret Service members wearing black suits and ear pieces surrounded the president to ensure his safety.

But the scene was different in Southampton Village.

Protestors and supports lined Hill Street and each faction was separated by Halsey Neck Lane.

On the southeastern corner, Janet Mance, 54, of Southampton was there to support her president with her two sons, Kevin and Kolby..

“I want to show President Trump that we support him a hundred percent,” Ms. Mance said on Friday. “Everything he’s working toward is to make this country great again and I support him a hundred percent. I have not seen anything I do not agree with.”

At times, supporters would chant, “We Love Trump! We Love Trump.”

On the other side of the street was a different scene. People shouted “Dump Trump” repeatedly while holding signs that said things like “NOT MY CLOWN!,” “IMPEACH TRUMP,” “GO HOME MR. TRUMP” and “PUTIN’S PUPPET.”

Judith Verno, 54, of Southampton held a sign demanding Mr. Trump be impeached, while also wearing a shirt that said, “F*** Trump.”

“I’m out here because I don’t think the president represents the values of this country,” Ms. Verno said. “I think he’s a bigot, a racist and a misogynist. I think his corporate interests outweigh the interests of america and he’s only in this for himself.”

Also protesting on Friday was Marlene Berman, 75, of East Hampton, who came out because she was not happy with the way the country was being run and what will be left for future generations to manage.

Lisa Votino-Tarrant, 39, of the Shinnecock Reservation organized the protest after finding out two days ago that Mr. Trump would be coming to town.

“I feel like there’s a lot of people out here that have been targeted by Trump and his policies and his words,” Ms. Votino-Tarrant said on Friday. “We have a great record of coming together when things like this happen, so it made sense to do and I knew lots of people would show up and we would all have a good time together.”

People from all backgrounds showed up at the protest, with senior citizens protesting what they said was Mr. Trump’s management of environmental policy, and youth protesting how he is running the country.

Dylan Berrocal, 10, used a marker to write, “Instead of helping the states, you’re ruining them.”

When Mr. Trump turned on Lee Avenue instead of Halsey Neck Lane, many of the protestors said he was a coward, but not everyone.

“It’s okay,” Ms. Mance said. “We were here for him.”

UPDATE: Friday 1:35 p.m.

President Donald Trump flew into Gabreski Airport in Westhampton on Friday afternoon for a much anticipated luncheon in Southampton Village.

Originally scheduled to fly in at 11:50 a.m., Air Force One did not land until 12:15 p.m.. When Mr. Trump arrived, local politicians like Lee Zeldin and Westhampton Beach Mayor Maria Moore were there to greet him, along with “The Beast,” his armored limousine.

After mingling with the crowd briefly, Mr. Trump got into the limousine and was driven to Southampton Village.

There to greet him, at the corner of Hill Street and Halsey Neck Lane, were numerous protests and supporters. But rather than pass the crowd, Mr. Trump’s motorcade turned onto Lee Avenue, just two streets to the west.

Protestors were also gathered in front of Gabreski Airport, as Mr. Trump's motorcade passed by.

UPDATE: Friday, 10 a.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued temporary flight restrictions for planes flying below 18,000 feet above the Hamptons on Friday.

According to James Brundige, the airport director for the Town of East Hampton, aircraft are prohibited from entering the airspace below 18,000 feet over the entire East End.

The only operations permitted when coordinated with an air traffic controller are military, medevac operations and planned commercial flights.

There is also a 32-mile radius in place over much Long Island that prohibits flight training, hang gliding, crop dusting and various other activities that take place in the air.

The restrictions were expected to go into effect on Friday at 11:15 a.m. and expire at 3:15 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Those heading to the East End on Friday could see longer than normal traffic delays, as President Donald Trump is expected to make his way to Southampton during the late morning.

Southampton Town Police Captain Lawrence Schurek said on Thursday that any delays will be minor and short in duration.

For security reasons, Captain Schurek would not say what roads were expected to be closed, but he did say that any roads that are closed will be closed only as the president’s motorcade passes, and then reopened.

According to a statement issued by the White House Press Office, Mr. Trump is scheduled to arrive on Air Force One at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton on Friday morning at 11:50 a.m.

Blair Ellis, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said Mr. Trump is expected to attend a fundraising luncheon with RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel in Southampton on Friday afternoon, reportedly at the Southampton estate of Manhattan developer Howard Lorber, who was a Trump campaign adviser in 2016 and is executive chairman of Nathan’s Famous Inc., the hot dog company.

The luncheon is expected to support the Trump Victory Committee, a joint fundraising effort for Mr. Trump’s 2020 campaign and the RNC.

Po Boy, show a few statistics with that accusation. You value your own opinion, I don’t. The reasons family’s are separated is because of trumps policy. He’s a tough guy acting tough.
By Fred s (992), Southampton on Aug 20, 18 10:57 AM
Who needs statistics when it's reality on the ground. Just watch any interview of a Border Patrol Agent or CBP Officer when the issue is discussed. You think every "family unit" comes with nice little printed documents, with Last name, First name neatly typed that clearly demonstrates familial relationship? Awww,

Certainly an upstanding member of society like MS-13 would NEVER use children or coerce others with intimidation in an attempt to deceive authorities in such a way.

Aug 20, 18 11:10 AM appended by Po Boy
"The reasons family’s are separated is because of trumps policy" says the guy who claims to refute bs. No so Fred. Obama did the same thing, it's the law and engrained in agency policy as a result. The difference is Trump is further following the law, and deporting those who have violated immigration law vs. the Obama era catch and release where almost no one showed for the immigration hearing.
By Po Boy (2542), Water Mill on Aug 20, 18 11:10 AM
Po Boy, more bs on your part. Go gather a few facts to back up your argument. Listen to a border patrol agent interview on tv? No that’s not lame, your getting the OPINION of that agent. You do not argue in good faith.obama separated people who weren’t family, unlike trump who separated families. Why do you continue to back up your arguments with nothing?
By Fred s (992), Southampton on Aug 20, 18 11:21 AM
Face it Fred, you want "facts," so you can dispute insignificant percentages while ignoring reality.

So, we shouldn't place value in the "opinion" of a Border Patrol Agent who works day-in-day-out in the Rio Grande Sector or even that of the spokesman for the Border Patrol union? That's rich.
By Po Boy (2542), Water Mill on Aug 20, 18 11:27 AM
Po Boy, keep framing your arguments with no fact or figures. It’s shallow and weak. The opinion of a border patrol agent, is just that an opinion . Try a little harder, wait in your case, try a lot harder. Insignificant percentages? Brilliant, if your discussing percentages, they are not insignificant.
By Fred s (992), Southampton on Aug 20, 18 11:54 AM
Actually Fred, it's not opinion, but first had knowledge acquired through their profession. Yes Fred "insignificant percentages"...it's how Fact Checking makes it's living. For example....Did he say 57%....well well...no....it's REALLY 50%, so "we" judge the statement as "false." Meanwhile, Border Patrol agents communicate the problem in depth...but good for you Fred..it's "50%."

I didn't say, "any", in your attemted quote, "you (I) trust any anecdotal evidence unless proven otherwise?" As to separated children, "they were only separated previously when they were at risk from the adults they traveled with as opposed to Trump's zero-tolerance policy" is not accurate. While yes, there is a zero tolerance policy in place vs. catch and release which sometimes allowed children to STAY in the company of unrelated adults, I'll quote Obama DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson: "I Freely Admit We Detained Children, It Was Necessary." He goes on to say, "they "thought it was necessary at the time," and that it still is." June 24, 2018.

I'd say that's the opposite of prudent, but I guess I just hold a higher bar for believing things any Joe Shmoe says.

Whether he was "not privileged to input from the experts" or ignored it is inconsequential: he was uninformed.

In any event, the claim that he wasn't "fully informed" was put forth by John Kelly...then Trump insisted that the original plans "had never changed."
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (3901), HAMPTON BAYS on Aug 28, 18 2:59 PM

You obviously have a lot of gullible posters on here who believe some crazy far fetched things. What’s the world according to Po Boy, throw anything against the wall and see if it sticks? Most of your stuff slides off into the dustbin of lies.

It’s a great day in America when those seeking asylum have achieved their ultimate dream of becoming a proud citizen of this great nation. When Emma Lazarus wrote, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”, was the intended meaning to provide citizenship to immigrants whose sole intent is that it allows them unrestricted travel to their nation of origin, or to those who drain our system of $138 billion in annual remittances, or to those who ...more

SDG, all citizens are afforded free travel abroad, why wouldn’t a citizen enjoy their rights. I know people of many ethnic origins who plan on retiring to their homelands. Croats, poles, Irish , Vietnamese to name a few.the American dream is to do what ever you’d like to do within the law. One other point, a lot of people do go back to find they like living in the USA better. Parsing reasons for citizenship is a slippery slope, people’s reasons change over time.

Fred, I think I mentioned that it is their legal right to do so, and they most certainly should exercise and enjoy that right, and it is heartfelt when I hear or know of a resident immigrant not being able to tend to a sick and dying family member for durations exceeding LPR rules, or losing LPR status by doing so, and having to apply for re-entry with the possibility of being denied. If you are paying taxes and are contributing to the system, you are entitled to all the benefits that go along with it.Go to any small town in Costa Rica, Mexico or other central or South American village, you will find many ex-pat Americans enjoying their retirement. The purge of the right on social media was once a slow trickle, with high-profile bans happening only occasionally, and then subsiding. With just three months until the midterm elections, the Masters of the Universe in Silicon Valley have turned online censorship into a cascade.
