Southampton Town Leaf Pickup Starts In Late November

Nov 8, 2018 3:30 PM

The Southampton Town Highway Department will kick off the 2018 fall leaf program on November 26—but with a few very specific rules.

The program implemented by Town Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor in 2012 allows town residents to put their leaves at the curb for pickup by Highway Department staff members.

Leaves must be placed at curbside in biodegradable paper bags, and only one collection will be done on each street this fall, according to a schedule.

According to the program, residents 73 years old and older can put their leaves at the curb loosely, without bagging them. The catch is that residents who want to do so must be registered with the town as a senior or as a disabled participant. A resident who registered last year is automatically registered for this year’s leaf pick-up.

Another option residents and contractors have is to haul the leaves to the nearest transfer station—in Westhampton, Hampton Bays, North Sea or Sag Harbor—and dump them there. Vouchers, for contractors doing the collection for residents, can be obtained beginning on November 15 by calling the Highway Department at 631-728-3600. Anyone older than 73 or with special needs can also call the Highway Department to register for curbside pick-up.

Sticks, leaves and brush will not be picked up by the Highway Department but can be dropped off at the transfer station for free.

The biodegradable paper bags can be found at local hardware stores, such as Herrick Hardware in Southampton, Shinnecock Hardware in Hampton Bays, and Ryder Hardware in East Quogue. A full list of stores can be found on the Highway Department’s website.

Calls and emails to Mr. Gregor seeking additional information about the program were not returned.
