The Southampton baseball team moved to 10-5 in League VIII, 12-5 overall after a dominant three-game sweep of Southold last week that clinched its spot in the Class B playoffs.

The Mariners outscored the Settlers, 39-3, over the course of three games, winning 12-3 at home on May 6, before a 12-0 shutout on the North Fork the next day, and a 15-0 effort two days later at home.

Southold dropped to 5-10, 5-12 overall.

Gabe Camacho threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts in the 15-0 win, while Thomas Gabriele had three home runs and seven RBIs.

As of Tuesday morning, Southampton sat in third place in League VIII behind Center Moriches (15-0) and Mattituck (11-4, 12-5). The Mariners were scheduled to take on the undefeated Red Devils in a three-game series this week, starting with a home game at 4 p.m. on May 14, followed by a game in Center Moriches at the same time on May 15 at 4 p.m., and the season finale in Southampton on May 16 at 4 p.m.

There could be as many as five teams in the Class B bracket, which would force a single-elimination outbracket game between the no. 4 and no. 5 seeds on Monday, May 20, at the higher seed’s home field. The winner of that game would advance to the double-elimination round, playing the top seed on Tuesday, May 21, while the no. 2 and no. 3 seeds also play that day. Center Moriches, Mattituck, Southampton and Babylon (9-6) had already clinched playoff spots at the start of this week, while Port Jefferson still needed one more win.

Despite its losing record, Southold is playoff-bound as well. As one of only two Class C schools playing in a mixed classification league with mostly Class B schools (and one Class D squad in Smithtown Christian), the Settlers will be granted entrance into the postseason, where they will face Pierson (5-10, 7-10), which will be the top seed in the two-team ‘C’ bracket. Pierson, the defending county champion, swept Smithtown Christian in three games last week, winning 18-3 at home on May 6, 10-4 on the road the next day, and 11-2 at home on May 9.

Cooper Schiavoni had three runs and three RBIs in the win on May 6, while Mark Mensch had three runs and four RBIs. Tucker Schiavoni had three RBIs in Tuesday’s win.

Pierson will host the first playoff game for the county title at Mashashimuet Park on May 29 at 4 p.m. and will visit Southold for the second game in the best-of-three series on May 31 at 4 p.m. A third game, if needed, will be in Sag Harbor at 4 p.m. on June 1.
