Carolyn G. Whitby of Southampton died on May 17, 2019, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. She was 70.
Born on August 25, 1948, to Frank and Anne Antinoro, she was raised in Patchogue and attended Patchogue schools.
While working in a tire store there, she met Al Whitby, the proprietor of Southampton Tire Center. They were married on April 24, 1974, and have run their Southampton business together for more than 40 years, working six days a week to meet the needs of their customers in the community.
Survivors said that one of her favorite mottoes was to “leave people better than when you found them.” She had a special place in her heart for the less fortunate and led a campaign to clothe and feed the hungry in the community, earning criticism from some and little recognition for her efforts. Her mission extended to feeding animals that wandered through her yard.
She will be missed by the members of her community that came to know her as more than a proprietor, but as a trusted friend, survivors said.
She is survived by her husband, Al; sister Joanne Antinoro; and brother Peter Antinoro, both of Patchogue; and Krystal Whitby of Southampton.
Memorial donations may be made to Heart of the Hamptons or East End Hospice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
