Absentee Ballots Put Eric Shultz Back On Democratic Party Ticket For Trustee Run In November

Jul 16, 2019 1:20 PM

The official results from the June 25 primary election in Southampton Town were finalized this week, resulting in a few shakeups.

Former Town Trustee Fred Havemeyer, who was one of six Democratic Party candidates seeking one of five Town Trustee positions in November, originally nabbed a spot on the ballot, but after the absentee ballots were counted, he was eliminated from the ballot.

Instead, former Town Trustee President Eric Shultz, who did not have a spot prior to the absentee ballots being counted, moved into the final open spot for Trustee. Mr. Shultz collected a total of 472 votes during the primary, and Mr. Havemeyer collected 462 votes.

“The Democratic leadership threw everything at me they could possibly find to knock me out of the primary,” Mr. Havemeyer said on Friday. “They told me early on that they didn’t want me on the ticket because of my strong role in the Rose Hill Road litigation to bring the park back to the people. They followed through.”

He was referring to a deal that was reached between all five current sitting Trustees and a homeowner on Rose Hill Road. As part of the deal, the homeowner was permitted to move a line of trees onto the Trustee-owned property at the end of Rose Hill Road, while also extending his driveway onto the property, in exchange for maintaining the boat ramp, road and landscaping. Trustee President Ed Warner Jr. has maintained that the property never left the Trustees’ possession.

Mr. Havemeyer said there is a chance that he still may be on the ballot with the Libertarian Party line but could not say if that was set in stone or not. “There’s a lot of people who like what I’m doing,” he said.

Mr. Shultz did not immediately return calls seeking comment on his primary win.

Joining him on the Democratic Party line are incumbents Bill Pell and Ann Welker, along with Andrew Brosnan and David Mayer.

The Working Families Party held a primary for two people to run for Town Board under the party line. Town Board member John Bouvier had the party endorsement and was listed on the primary ballot, while the other slot was open for write-in candidates.

Republican Party candidates Richard Martel, who took in 13 votes, and Charles McArdle, who collected 11, earned the party’s endorsement. Despite being listed on the ballot, Mr. Bouvier collected the third-highest number of votes with eight—losing the endorsement.

Mr. Bouvier was not available for comment on Friday afternoon.

In other races, Alex Gregor, the Southampton Town highway superintendent, held on in his win against Supervisor Jay Schneiderman to run for town supervisor on the Independence Party line. Mr. Gregor collected a total of 90 votes, while Mr. Schneiderman had 83.

Town Tax Receiver Theresa Kiernan held on to the Independence Party line with a total of 116 votes. Her opponent, Southampton Democratic Party leader Gordon Herr, tallied 53 votes.

Voters, cross party lines as it is not about the party but about the person and their platform. Vote for a new town board and a new tax receiver and some new trustees.
