Edward G. Britt, formerly of Southampton, died on May 20 at his Edenton, North Carolina, home. He was 78.

Born January 13, 1936, to Margaret and Leo Britt in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Shadwell. He married his sweetheart, Barbara, and they started a family and moved to Southampton. A Little League coach, religious education instructor and eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Poland Church, Mr. Britt loved life and gave of himself to others, said survivors. After a 17-year career at the Long Island Lighting Company in a supervisory position, Mr. Britt began a general contracting company, building many houses in the Hamptons. He was an advocate for his community, survivors said, and his civic career included having served on the Southampton Town Planning Board, as a trustee for the Village of Southampton and as the Southampton Village Fire Commissioner, before his retirement in 2005.

For the past nine years, Edenton had been his home with his wife at his side. Still passionate about being involved, he served on the board of the Chowan Golf & Country Club.

Mr. Britt is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara; two sisters, Kathy and Bonnie; five children, Beth, Meg, Joe, Tim and Amy; and sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, Jon Monroe, John Zaluski, Lisa Britt, Melissa Britt and Jeff Abel; and 10 grandchildren, Sean, Zach, Justine, Michael, Matthew, Christian, Sara, Shelby, Annabelle and Jacob.

A funeral service took place on May 26 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Edenton. A memorial service will be held in Southampton at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or St. Anne Church, 207 North Broad Street, Edenton, NC 27932.
