UPDATE: Two injured In Double Car Accident On County Road 39

Jun 1, 2014 8:15 PM

UPDATE, 10:45 P.M.:

Friday afternoon’s four-car accident was “basically two accidents,” one caused by the other, according to Southampton Town Police Sergeant Andrew Ficurilli.

He said an SUV was heading eastbound on County Road 39 when the driver realized the vehicle in front of them had slammed on its brakes. The SUV then lost control and skidded sideways into the westbound lane and was struck by an oncoming car.

Two west-traveling vehicles, trying to avoid the accident, then crashed into each other, Sgt. Ficurilli said.

All cars ended up in the westbound lane, he said.

Two people were taken to the hospital by Southampton and Hampton Bays ambulance volunteers with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Ficurilli said Saturday that the accident report was incomplete and could not identify the victims.

He said alcohol was not a factor in the accidents and no one was arrested.

UPDATE, 5:16 P.M.:

Southampton Town Police have reopened both directions of County Road 39, as well as the eastbound lanes Sunrise Highway between Hampton Bays and Shinnecock Hills, as of 5 p.m. Friday.

Heavy traffic delays are still being reported along the roads that feed County Road 39 on the eastern side of the Shinnecock Canal as of 5:30 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A four-car accident on County Road 39 in Tuckahoe shortly after 4 p.m. Friday has forced police to close the highway in both directions, as well as Sunrise Highway east of Exit 66 in Hampton Bays.

The cause of the four-car pileup near the Hill Station Road intersection had not been determined as of 4:30 p.m., Southampton Town Police Sergeant Susan Ralph said, adding that the road would remain closed until all four cars are cleared.

A call reporting the crash came in to 911 at 4:07 p.m. and, as of 4:30 p.m., there were several ambulances on scene treating those injured during the incident. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known, although there did not appear to be any fatalities.

Police suggest using Montauk Highway as an alternate route.

I always take the back roads starting at sebonac in order to avoid getting caught in the 8 hour traffic jams that happen when there's an accident on CR 39. I was shocked to get caught in a miles-long traffic jam on shrubland road. In 21 years, I've never seen such a thing. When we finally got on CR 39, it was ironic to see eastbound traffic zipping along on a Friday while the westbound lane was crawling at a snail's space.

Here's something I've noticed this year that I've never experience ...more

Same thing happened at a red light with me today. I was waiting for the oncoming left turn traffic to clear and some ******e behind me just had to beep the horn.

'Tis the season...

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's getting on my last nerve. I have and overwhelming desire to turn my car in a way to prevent going around me, then getting out of my car and tapping on the offenders window. "Let me get this straight. You don't know what a stop sign means? Allow me to instruct you. You must come to a complete stop at a stop sign. You don't roll through it. Have you understood what I just said?"

A few organized homeowners who wanted peace and quiet and no traffic in their got those roads dead ended to the detriment of the entire east End community.

They must have contributed to the supervisor or some influential politician to accomplish that. With so many citizens disadvantaged and inconvenienced, you would think there would at least have been a referendum of all stakeholders.

It has really jammed up traffic in the alternate routes.

Hills Station road intersection is a death trap! Needs a directional island for right turns in--right turns out only--no more left hand turns onto Sunrise or into Hills Station!

Traffic in and out of those streets can continue on the North Rd--use the safe and underutilized Peconic Bridge overpass--and then use Long View Rd.

Or people could just use common sense and do that anyway like most of us with a brain have been doing for years.

OR, they could start cracking down on the speeders who prevent people from turning out of Hill Station in a timely manner...

The cops got ticked off when the sign was taken away so they no longer enforce the speed limit on 39. I have never seen a SH Town Police Car checking speed or posted anywhere in plain sight on Cty Rd. 39. I've also never seen more than a few cars at a time actually going the 35mph speed limit. Even the Jitney still goes 50+mph.

Rectal cranial inversion seems to be the norm on CR 39! Buncha UTIs (up the island) driving like maniacs , ignoring the speed limit, changing lanes without signaling and in general, driving like they don't care if they make it or not. Add in texting, and those just learning to drive, both local and recent immigrants, and it's makes a dangerous situation worse.

"Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still ...more

It ain't about class warfare. Everyone drives too fast on CR39.
By Josurfer (12), southampton on Jun 1, 14 6:32 AM
That was for BF. And, it's not "class warfare". It's a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the greatest, most brilliant writers of the 20th century. When he speaks, I would listen if I were you. Pulling that card only displays a simple train of thought.

And, personally, I set the cruise control to 40 and **** off anyone who is speeding. When people speed, they screw up the timing between the lights. They are designed to, and communicate to create gaps in traffic so people can ...more

"Timed lights," that's the ticket suggested here for years -- from Hill Station Road to the Napeague Stretch +/- TBD.

Remember US Route 5 south of Hartford CT in the 1950's and 60's? Timed lights, and there were many, to control this major commute road into Insurance City at 35 MPH, as I recall. Slow and steady going, with the emphasis on "go" without accidents.

CONTROL the cars, or they will control us.

East End Shuttle -- build it and they will come!

Southampton Town Police need to help us by enforcing the speed limit, the non signaling lane changers, the road ragers, the U-turners, the dangerous poor drivers...... Please. Our Southampton Town Board elected paid officials should be attempting to protect us all just a little better....... Please.

The Town Board could also update us on the unsolved hit-and-run death of Sister Jackie Walsh on July 9, 2012, almost two years ago. Why DID the SHT PD wait 11 days to release the ID and photo of the alleged driver?

We shall remember always . . .

Why not allow citizen volunteers to take care of ticketing? Have criteria -- someone who's never had a traffic ticket, who has no criminal record, has never gone bankrupt or defaulted on a mortgage, etc., who undergoes a number of hours of instruction. Then they can have red lights installed in their cars and be allowed to pull people over and ticket them. You don't need the police for issuing traffic violations.

Deputized with a ticket book.

Why stop at deputization? Just put machine guns and cannons on each citizen deputy's car.

Judge, jury and executioner . . .

Can't wait to see what HHS has to say -- maybe his lay court justices could also be traffic not-cops, in their spare time?

Time to move before CR39 devolves into the next scene of the end of the world as we knew it . . .

to PBR:

Wouldn't work. The STPD PBA would enjoin the inception of the volunteer program as a violation of the contractual rights of its union members.

It would, however, approve of the concept of increased scrutiny. The town need merely bring on another dozen or so cops at $150 thousand apiece.

Just saw a taxi today, making left turn onto windmill lane from white st, going in the left land (i.e. wrong way) then run the red light and making another left turn onto north sea road.... summer time used to be crazy, but not this crazy until now. The drivers here both in beat up old cars from out of state to the shiny benz are driving like maniacs.
