Bessie Selina Quinn Marshall of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation died on December 26. She was 92.
Born on February 12, 1922, on the Reservation, she was the daughter of Ada Williams Quinn and William Grandville Quinn Sr. and attended the one-room schoolhouse. She was an active member of the United Presbyterian Women for 40 years and a member of the Senior Citizens program and club. She belonged to the “Home Bureau” club and learned to upholster furniture, and create ceramic lamps and dinner trays. For more than 20 years she worked for the Glennon family, as well as the Catholic church in Southampton.
On August 21, 1946, she married Thomas Henry Marshall—it was the first wedding ceremony at the new church on the Shinnecock Reservation, and the Reverend J. Raymond Vaughn officiated. The couple had two children, Gail Marshall Thompson and June Marshall, both of whom survive.
Ms. Marshall is predeceased by seven sisters and brothers, Gertrude Arrington, Gladys Simmons, Evelyn Arrington, David Quinn, Herman Quinn, William Quinn, and Catherine Bosley. In addition to her children, she is survived by a son-in-law, Kenneth Thompson; three grandchildren, Damon Moore, Aaron Marshall and wife Maria, and Douglas Moore and wife Liz; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Gardner, Cheyenne Gardner, Devon Moore, Jourdon Marshall, Jaden Marshall, Domonic Moore, Jazmin Marshall, and Mia Moore; one great-great-grandchild, Caiden Gardner; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral was held on December 30 at the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, officiated by the Reverend Michael F. Smith, followed by interment at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
