James G. Nuland, known as “Jay,” of Ridgefield Crossings, Connecticut, and formerly of Dallas and Quogue, died in Ridgefield, Connecticut, on December 25 after a long illness. He was 89.
Mr. Nuland was born in Tianjin, China, on March 19, 1925, and lived in Tianjin, as well as Wellington, New Zealand and Cape Town, South Africa, before coming to the United States at the age of 14 to attend the Kent School. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard and spent time at Yale at Officer Training School.
He served in the Navy as a lieutenant, junior grade, in the South Pacific during World War II and later worked as a partner in several financial firms in New York before moving to Texas to work in the oil business. Upon his retirement, he was senior vice president of investor relations for the Halliburton Company. After retiring, Mr. Nuland became a longtime resident of Quogue, serving on the School Board, East End Hospice and several other community boards.
Mr. Nuland was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Fitz-Gibbon; and a daughter, Patricia Chandler. He is survived by three sons and their wives, James Jr. and wife Tris of Massachusetts, Christopher and wife Karen of Florida, and Timothy and wife Kitsey of Ridgefield; and a son-in-law, Rick Chandler and wife Suzie of Massachusetts. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
A funeral was held on December 29 at Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach and a graveside service took place at Quogue Cemetery with military honors.
