William Lorne Donnelly of Goshen died on March 7 at Glen Arden Health Care in Goshen. He was 99 and also had a home in Southampton.
Dr. Donnelly was born July 3, 1915, in Brooklyn, the son of William Henry and Jane (Hoctor) Donnelly. His wife, Marie G. (Busch) Donnelly, predeceased him on December 18, 2008.
Dr. Donnelly served in the U.S. Army as a captain in the Medical Corps during World War II, from 1945 to 1947. He attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn; New York University College of Engineering; and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was director of Ophthalmology at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre; president of the Long Island Ophthalmological Society; chairman of the Section of Ophthalmology, Nassau Academy of Medicine; fellow at the American College of Surgeons (FACS); and a fellow at American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was chairman of the South Central District, Nassau County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of the Executive Council, Nassau County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Locally, he was a member and a supporter of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons.
Dr. Donnelly is survived by five children, Laureen Donnelly of Maine, Gregory Donnelly and wife Ann of Montana, Michael Donnelly and wife Patricia of Goshen, Kevin Donnelly and wife Judi of Massachusetts, and Christopher Donnelly and wife Ann of Vermont; seven grandchildren, Peter Donnelly, Daniel, Kiely and Laura Donnelly; and Lisa and Jenny Donnelly and Kristen Donnelly; and two great-grandchildren, Kiran and Rhona; as well a sister-in-law, Sister Victoria Busch.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Henry Gordon Donnelly.
Funeral services, under the direction of the Donovan Funeral Home in Goshen, were held last week. Burial was at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery in Southampton on March 14.
