Tea Party Holds Third Annual Tax Day Protest In East Hampton

Apr 19, 2011 3:26 PM

Two years after staging their first Tax Day protest, East Hampton Town’s Tea Party activists are still here, and they’re still hungry for less.

About a dozen of the anti-tax movement’s supporters lined the road in front of Town Hall at high noon last Friday, April 15, the traditional tax filing day, donning tri-cornered hats and hoisting no fewer than three Gadsden flags.

This year’s protest fell days before the actual filing deadline—which the Internal Revenue Service extended to April 18 this year—but coincided with President Barack Obama’s signing of a bipartisan deal that cut $38 billion from the federal budget.

Even though the bill represents the deepest year-to-year federal spending cut ever, Tea Party members at the rally found it to be no cause for celebration. They said Congressional Republicans—who enjoyed a huge Tea Party boost at the polls last year—should have pushed harder.

“It was pathetic,” said Lynda Edwards of Amagansett, the organizer of the local Tea Party movement. “They caved in. They had the upper hand and they caved.”

“The real spending still hasn’t been touched yet,” agreed Edward Nash of East Hampton. “There are whole departments of the government that are useless.” When asked for an example, Mr. Nash named the U.S. Department of Education.

Spending by local school districts was a subject of ire at this year’s protest, with attendees noting that school taxes make up the bulk of property taxes. “Seventy percent of our taxes out here is schools, and we can’t afford it,” said Ms. Edwards, who wore a shirt emblazoned with the American flag and held a sign that read “Taxed Enough Already!” “The middle class can’t afford to stay here.”

In interviews, protesters also railed against illegal immigration, public employees’ salaries and what they perceived as waste, abuse and fraud in government assistance programs like food stamps, welfare, unemployment benefits and Medicaid.

“I guess there are too many people in the country in general who aren’t working and are getting some form of assistance from the government who don’t need it,” said Vincent Biondo of Montauk, an employee of Citarella, a gourmet market in Bridgehampton. “There’s a thing called a second job. If you can’t make it on your first job, you take a second job.”

Pat Flynn of Montauk, a retiree who wore a yellow sweatshirt with the phrase “Don’t Tread On Me,” said she was worried about the costs of “illegals” and others receiving food stamps and unemployment benefits when they didn’t need them. “Why are they taking from me to give to someone else who is sitting there?” she asked.

When asked about local politics, several protesters expressed satisfaction with the administration of Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson, a Republican who took office in 2010 and cut spending and taxes during his first year.

“These guys are trying, I think they’re trying to keep things down, which is a good thing,” Mr. Biondo said. “Nationally, I think it’s going down the sewer.” When Mr. Wilkinson drove past in a town vehicle, Mr. Biondo shouted, “Hey Bill, we have a few more signs out here! Come on out!” spurring the supervisor to stop at the entrance of Town Hall, roll down his window and wave.

Councilwoman Theresa Quigley, a Republican who took office at the same time as Mr. Wilkinson, received a similar greeting when she pulled into Town Hall, and replied, “I’ll be out in 10 minutes!” Then she appeared on the sidewalk, and spent a few minutes shaking hands and chatting. Republican Committee Chairwoman Trace Duryea joined the protest as well, toting a tiny American flag.

Even with all their concerns, some protesters said they felt things were moving in the right direction nationally, pointing to huge gains by conservative Republicans in Congress and statehouses last year and an escalating debate about government spending and the federal deficit. “I think it’s a breath of fresh air,” Reg Cornelia, a former Springs School Board member, said of the new Congress.

Paul Babcock of Sag Harbor called last November’s election a “clear repudiation” of “the Obama liberal progressive agenda.” “Part of the spark that ignited voters to come out was the Tea Party,” he said. He defined the movement’s core principles as “constitutionally limited government, fiscal responsibility and free-market capitalism.”

Do these people really know what "free market" capitalism really is?

And, which budget are they hell bent on cutting?

The real one on paper, or the "Shadow Budget"?

I've heard less propaganda quoted from Kruschev. Maybe instead of bashing Obama, and his "liberal" policy, it would help if they actually went after the real criminals like Bernanke, Geithner, Blankfien, et al. .

I don't hear anything about undoing the changes to the CEA, and the speculative markets, I don't hear anything about repealing the GLBA, and ending the reign of the "mega-banks". I hear nothing about ending bailouts, and DEMANDING banks BAIL THEMSELVES OUT with what should be reserve capital they currently dispense as "compensation". I don't hear anything about amending oversight of the derivatives markets, and I also hear nothing about bring hedge funds out of their "black file cabinet" closet. You want "free market capitalism"? There's a start...

And, here's a real idea.

Start collecting signatures to collecitvely sue Goldman-Sachs, JP Morgan-Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and Wells-Fargo on behalf of the American Taxpayer.

You can use the Levin-Coburn Report as Exhibit A.

If Obama is being truthful and has nothing to hide then Trump should test him with an offer he can't reasonably refuse. The offer will be the sum of $5 million (or more) as a donation to Obama's favorite charity* in exchange for going public with an authentic copy of his original birth certificate. If Obama ignores the offer and is willing to endure the bad publicity of depriving a humane and worthy charity of millions in needed funds (done over a paltry birth certificate) then we can be certain ...more

I don't care if Obama is from the moon, he's inept. Not that I fault voters for having zero interest in McCain. I fully understand why so many voted for Obama in 2008. What I don't understand is why so many refuse to acknowledge the terrible job he has done while being in office. I really hope that 2012 provides us with better choices. Early signs suggest that we won't.

You are correct Joe, his own grand mother claimed that he was born in a hospital in Kenya and that she "remembered the day well"! Expanded heatlhcare coverage that lowers the debt while decreasing costs and helping the poor.

Thank you, summertime. All I did was post what I considered to be an appropriate response to his sexist, vile posting. I wonder why the moderator did not remove Mr. Z's post?
By fcmcmann (417), Hampton Bays on May 4, 11 12:49 PM
No, I believe it's most likely gone because you proved my point. Sorry I missed reading it, I was ill for a few days.

"Darlin'" was not meant to be sexist, vile, or demeaning.

It's simple vernacular. You simply assume the worst, about anything, and everything.

Remind me again, what that idiom alludes to? A psych (therapy) session, perhaps?

Bin Laden is a goner. The Obama admin got this one right, it was handled perfectly. The Navy Seals are an awesome bunch. Left, right or center today is a good day.

Spare us your righteous indignation fcmcmann. It's galliing to see the very people who spent the last 8 years comparing our troops to Nazi's and beating their chests in anguish over the civil rights of Kalid Sheik Mohammed, "illegal" and "immoral" drone attacks, suddenly embracing targeted killing.

If Obama "inherited" every problem faced by the country then he also inherited the intelligence and military capabilites left to him by the previous administration.

By RealityFirst (597), Bridgehampton on May 2, 11 9:49 PM
Oh, I see.

If you care so deeply about granting civil rights and the due process of law being extended to our enemies, why are you condoning the violation of Pakistan's sovereignity and the assasination of OBL?

Are their any other brown people who it's ok to assasinate, or was this a one time exception to your unshakeable convictions?

By RealityFirst (597), Bridgehampton on May 2, 11 10:21 PM
By your logic, dropping a bomb on the compound would have been murder then, right? Just like all those drone attacks...

Yeah, now you have "faith" in our justice system, which your side characterized as rigged and racist.

Face it, you and OBL have at least one thing in common, you both see America as an evil empire.
By RealityFirst (597), Bridgehampton on May 2, 11 10:34 PM
It was the procedures and methods that the Bush admin put in place that allowed intel to gather info. It was the Obama admin who used that info and formulated an outstanding plan to nail Bin Laden.

I'm certainly no fan of Bush or Obama, but I must give credit to both here.
There will be time to debate social and fiscal policies between now and 2012, but for now I'm going to be proud of the fact that America has the capacity to reach half way across the world and take out a really bad ...more

It had nothing to do with the Bush administration. This was all Obama and Panetta. Earlier on you tried to be gracious, but now you try to give credit to Bush? What a joke.

You really need to get a grip. They were monitoring messengers since 2003. Have you been paying attention to this at all? Is your Bush hatred so blinding?

Did you even read my post before spewing your usual garbage.
Again, you need to get a grip.

Blind.

I love how Razza is such a big fan of targeted assasination now :)

Are there any other brown people not entitled to due process Razza, or was the extrajudicial execution of this particular unarmed person a one time exception?

By RealityFirst (597), Bridgehampton on May 3, 11 6:54 PM
Again, the procedures used to gather some of the intel that the Obama admin used were in place from the prior admin. Regardless of the fairytale that Razza wants to believe this was a process that began well before the Obama presidency.

The Obama admin used the intel, made a gutsy call and a bunch outstanding decisions on how to execute the mission and what to do afterward.

So today, I'm grateful for the procedures that were in place prior to the Obama presidency, and the decisions ...more

I keep the argument going and they just keep posting away what their true beliefs are, and then they call others nuts.
