“As you can see, we have a lot of personality,” someone in the East Hampton High School Jazz Band—or was it Marilyn Van Scoyoc, their director?—said after about 16 kids filed into the rehearsal room, grabbed sheet music from skinny cubbies, and unpacked mostly brass instruments.
On one wall hung a poster: “EHHS Jazz Band Benefit: Friday, February 3rd, 7 p.m. A Night of Music to support the EHHS Jazz Band trip to their Florida competition in March.” More on that later.
“We’re aspiring musicians,” said one boy. “We want to ignite a fire,” said another. One kid said he had to get going soon for a different extracurricular. “It does not matter—when you’re in jazz band,” another boy lectured him with mock self-importance.
