For my last diary entry, I would like to thank the entire Southampton community for supporting your Lady Mariners on our journey to winning the Long Island Class B Championship. We had a really good win against a really good team. Cold Spring Harbor, the two-time Nassau Class B Champion, was also undefeated in its league. After the game, the Southampton Fire and Police departments escorted us into town making us feel like true champions. We made history and will never forget that truly surreal experience.
Our next game was against the Irvington Lady Bulldogs for a chance to go the state final four. They were the two-time state champions and they played like it.
They were the best team we’ve faced in our high school careers thus far. The good news is we have a new goal, to go further than we did this year.
Speaking of goals, we received the Scholar Athlete Team Award given by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This honor is awarded to high school teams that have at least seven players who collectively have a 90 average or above. We are proud of our work on and off the court.
When you start naming people to thank, you always forget someone, but I’m going to try anyway. Thanks Coach Juni (League VII Coach of the Year), Coach Guida, Coach P (aka my dad), Lisa Goree (aka Twizzler mom) for keeping the books, and our statistician, Dr. Guida. Thank you to our favorite newspaper, the Southampton Press, for covering girls sports. Thank you to Coach Nick Thomas for allowing me to write the diaries and Cailin Riley for the great coverage. Thank you to the entire Southampton School district, the board of education, administrators, teachers, staff, custodians, security, bus drivers, and our classmates. Thank you to WLNG and Mr. Mackey from 88.3. Thank you to the many local Lady Mariner sponsors. Thank you to the Southampton Fire and Police departments. Thank you Reverend Dozier. Thank you to Coach Herm and the Southampton boys basketball team. Thank you to my Shinnecock family. Thank you to everyone that believes in us. Until next year!
As Coach Juni says, “Good, better, best, never let it rest!”
